Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Strategic Energy Partnership with EU

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Algeria on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to consolidating its strategic energy partnership with the European Union through joint investments in hydrocarbons and renewable energy, during the 6th High-Level Energy Dialogue between Algeria and the EU held in the capital.
The meeting was co-chaired by Minister of State and Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal, and European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen.
In a joint press briefing following the talks, Arkab said Algeria remains firmly committed to strengthening its strategic energy partnership with the EU in service of shared interests, reinforcing its position as a central player in regional and international gas markets. He reiterated Algeria’s determination to maintain its role as a reliable primary supplier of natural gas to the European market within a framework “based on trust, mutual respect and balanced interests.”
The discussions addressed prospects for expanding investment in Algeria’s hydrocarbons sector, particularly in exploration, production and infrastructure development, with a view to ensuring sustainable supply and enhancing energy security. Arkab described the talks as “an important milestone” in deepening strategic cooperation in hydrocarbons and natural gas in particular.
On environmental issues, the minister recalled Algeria’s commitment to reducing methane emissions and its carbon footprint through concrete programs aimed at improving environmental performance across the hydrocarbons value chain, contributing to international efforts to address climate change.
For his part, Adjal said the meeting examined avenues for strengthening strategic cooperation in new and renewable energies, infrastructure development and cross-Mediterranean energy projects, including electricity interconnection and green hydrogen initiatives. He stressed the importance Algeria attaches to these projects, describing them as a cornerstone for productive cooperation and as key to consolidating Algeria’s position as a reliable supplier of clean and sustainable energy.
European Commissioner Jørgensen highlighted the longstanding energy relationship between Algeria and the EU, noting that “Algeria has for decades been a very important partner in the field of gas.” He underlined the EU’s interest in deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in renewable energy, citing Algeria’s considerable potential within the broader energy transition process. He emphasized the strategic importance of cooperation in green hydrogen production and renewable electricity generation, sectors offering “numerous advantages” in which Algeria holds significant potential. The commissioner described the meeting as successful.
Working Groups Established to Advance Cooperation
Miloud Medjelled, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, announced the creation of several working groups with the participation of European companies. Among them is a high-level technical group, co-chaired by both parties, tasked with examining issues related to reducing the carbon footprint across oil and natural gas value chains.
Medjelled underscored the importance of cooperation in relation to EU regulations, particularly those concerning carbon and methane emission reductions. He noted that adapting to these frameworks requires advanced technologies, substantial investment and time for implementation. “The Algerian side advocates prioritizing a deep, balanced and pragmatic dialogue that takes into account the realities of producing countries and preserves common interests,” he said, adding that the energy transition can only succeed within a shared vision based on complementarity between partners.
Meanwhile, Nabil Kafi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, outlined Algeria’s ambitions in renewable energy. He said the country has launched a program to generate approximately 4,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable sources, currently under implementation as part of a broader 15,000-megawatt plan by 2035. The initiative, he said, is expected to position Algeria among the leading African nations in renewable energy.
Algeria also possesses significant electricity generation capacity that could be exported to Europe through planned interconnections, alongside ongoing projects to develop green hydrogen, Kafi added, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in the evolving Euro-Mediterranean energy landscape.
