Algeria Reaffirms Its Commitment to Strengthening the African Peer Review Mechanism

State Secretary for African Affairs Bakhta Selma Mansouri Meets with APRM Executive Director to Bolster Governance and Development in Africa

Algiers, Algeria | May 18th, 2025 — Algeria has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) as a key pillar of continental governance and sustainable development. On the sidelines of the Islamic Development Bank’s Annual Meetings, scheduled from May 19 to 22 in Algiers, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, the State Secretary in charge of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received Ms. Marie-Antoinette Rose-Cater, Executive Director of the APRM Continental Secretariat.

This high-level meeting served as a renewed affirmation of Algeria’s strategic engagement with the African Union’s governance architecture, particularly under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who currently chairs the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government.

During the discussions, both sides underscored the imperative of intensifying joint efforts to promote the role and visibility of the APRM across the continent. The parties stressed the need to reinvigorate national structures involved in the mechanism and ensure the effective implementation of its objectives, particularly those tied to good governance, institutional accountability, and sustainable development.

Ms. Mansouri highlighted Algeria’s readiness to enhance coordination between relevant stakeholders and reinforce national ownership of the peer review process. She reiterated that the country remains fully aligned with the APRM’s values of transparency, self-assessment, and constructive dialogue among African nations.

Moreover, the meeting emphasized the importance of consolidating inter-African consultations and elevating the continent’s collective capacity to address governance challenges. In this context, Algeria expressed its determination to be a proactive partner in furthering the goals of peace, stability, and economic progress through the institutional framework of the APRM.
