Algiers, Algeria | June 26th, 2025 — Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received on Thursday, June 26, 2025, the African Union Commissioner for Energy and Infrastructure, Ms. Lerato Dorothée Matabogi, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Algiers. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 12th edition of the Sonatrach Scientific and Technical Days (JST12), hosted at the Mohamed Ben Ahmed Convention Center in Oran.

Also in attendance were Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassa, Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal, and several senior officials from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Arkab extended warm congratulations to Ms. Matabogi on her recent appointment as AU Commissioner, expressing confidence in her leadership during this critical phase of global energy transformation. He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to strengthening African solidarity and regional development through energy cooperation.

The meeting offered an opportunity to underscore the depth of Algeria’s ties with African countries and its strategic position within the African Union, notably as host of the headquarters of the African Energy Commission (AFREC). Discussions highlighted Algeria’s proactive role in continental initiatives aimed at enhancing energy security and infrastructure across Africa.

The two sides explored future avenues for cooperation between Algeria and the African Union Commission for Energy and Infrastructure. This includes technical training, knowledge sharing, and human resource development in specialized Algerian institutions such as the Algerian Petroleum Institute and Sonelgaz training centers. These initiatives aim to bolster African expertise and enable countries across the continent to tackle energy sector challenges with greater capacity.

Minister Arkab reiterated Algeria’s full readiness to share its experience in key areas including exploration, energy transformation, infrastructure development, renewable energy, and cross-border energy transport. Algeria is prepared to support its African partners through real partnerships focused on capacity building, co-development of projects, and the implementation of regional infrastructure such as power interconnection lines and gas pipelines—critical steps toward continental energy integration and security.

Both parties also reviewed progress on the African Energy Bank project, initiated by the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO), which promises to be a game-changer in funding energy projects across Africa. The bank will facilitate access to much-needed financial resources to implement large-scale infrastructure and provide affordable funding options for member states.

For her part, Commissioner Matabogi expressed high appreciation for Algeria’s consistent and principled commitment to African unity and cooperation. She commended Algeria’s achievements in energy development, scientific research, and innovation, and its dedication to advancing the continent’s energy potential through capacity building and investment.

The meeting concluded with a mutual reaffirmation of commitment to continuous coordination and active participation in continental initiatives. Both parties emphasized the importance of joint action to build a secure, inclusive, and sustainable energy future that meets the aspirations of African peoples for development, dignity, and stability.
