Algeria Reaffirms Its Enduring Commitment to Africa’s Development at the UNCTAD 16th Ministerial Session in Geneva

Algiers – October 2025 – Speaking at the African Ministerial Meeting held on the sidelines of the 16th Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, Minister of Trade and Export Promotion Kamel Rezig reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to supporting the development of Africa through major continental projects that embody the vision and directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Rezig emphasized that Algeria continues to play a proactive and strategic role in advancing African development by implementing large-scale projects such as the Trans-Saharan Highway, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, and the ambitious high-speed Internet connectivity project linking African nations. These initiatives, he noted, constitute the backbone of the continent’s economic integration and technological modernization, fostering sustainable inter-African cooperation.
The minister also highlighted Algeria’s efforts to promote intra-African trade, recalling its hosting of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) held from 4 to 10 September, which served as a dynamic platform for African enterprises, investors, and policymakers to deepen commercial partnerships and enhance economic synergy across the continent.
Rezig further pointed to another major Algerian initiative — the creation of a one-billion-dollar fund dedicated to supporting African start-ups and young innovators, aimed at financing key projects in the sectors of infrastructure, education, health, and energy. He underscored that this initiative reflects Algeria’s steadfast belief in African solidarity, collective self-reliance, and the empowerment of the continent’s youth and entrepreneurial spirit.
Reaffirming Algeria’s attachment to effective African solidarity, the minister called for stronger cooperation in the exchange of expertise and the promotion of joint investments in infrastructure and industrial value chains. He particularly stressed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a strategic instrument for strengthening continental integration by removing customs barriers and facilitating the movement of goods, services, and capital across borders.
Turning to the issue of Africa’s debt crisis, Rezig insisted on the need for a radical and equitable solution, commending the establishment of the African Credit Rating Agency (AFCRA) as a pivotal mechanism for achieving financial justice and sustainable development on the continent. He also praised UNCTAD’s crucial role as a key partner for African nations, supporting economic policies through research, technical assistance, and capacity-building in areas such as structural transformation, debt relief, digital transition, and the empowerment of youth and women.
The Algerian minister further noted that this 16th Session of UNCTAD is being held amid an exceptionally challenging international context characterized by economic, financial, climatic, and geopolitical crises, all of which pose serious obstacles to Africa’s sustainable development. He cited rising debt levels, declining foreign investment, market volatility, and soaring prices of energy and food as compounding factors, while warning that climate change and the digital divide threaten food and water security as well as the continent’s technological advancement.
Held from October 20 to 23 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the 16th Session of UNCTAD—under the theme “Deciding the Future: Driving Economic Transformation for Fair, Inclusive, and Sustainable Development”—brings together heads of state and government, ministers from 195 member states, as well as international organization leaders, Nobel laureates, economists, civil society representatives, and global financial and trade institutions.
Representing Algeria among this distinguished assembly, Minister Kamel Rezig reaffirmed that Algeria’s strategic vision for Africa is grounded in solidarity, partnership, and shared progress—values that continue to guide the nation’s contribution to building a strong, integrated, and sovereign African continent capable of shaping its own destiny in the global economy.
