At the “SALAM NORTH AFRICA III” Exercise in Oran, Algeria Calls for Strengthening Continental Defense Cooperation Under the AU Framework

Algiers, Algeria | May 27th, 2025 — In a powerful reaffirmation of Algeria’s enduring dedication to the promotion of regional peace and continental stability, General of the Army Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP) and Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense, underscored Algeria’s steadfast support for African security mechanisms during the “SALAM NORTH AFRICA III” military exercise currently underway in Oran.

Speaking at the Higher School of Infantry Djelloul Abidate in the 2nd Military Region, where the exercise is taking place from May 17 to 29, General Chanegriha emphasized that Algeria’s strategic vision is rooted in a firm belief in African-led solutions to African challenges. “It is a profound honor to welcome you all to Algeria on the occasion of the SALAM NORTH AFRICA III exercise,” Chanegriha began. “This initiative coincides with the celebration of Africa Day, and symbolizes our unwavering commitment to reinforcing the continental peace and security mechanisms and to deepening regional military cooperation under the banner of the African Union.”

Organized as part of the North African Regional Capability (NARC), the exercise is designed to enhance the operational readiness and coordination between member states of this African peacekeeping mechanism. It reflects Algeria’s sustained efforts to promote a stable, prosperous Africa by reinforcing collective preparedness in response to security threats and crises.

“The primary strategic goal is to foster a more stable and secure Africa,” Chanegriha declared. “Algeria, which has once again been elected to the African Union Peace and Security Council, views this mission as a responsibility. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune personally places considerable importance on activating African cooperation mechanisms, especially within our shared North African geographical sphere.”

The event drew high-level military officials, experts, and observers from across the African continent. Major General Belkacem Hasnat, Chief of the ANP’s Employment and Preparation Department, presided over the operational phase of the exercise, which involved representatives of NARC’s Chiefs of Staff, the Executive Secretary of NARC Ahmed Ahmeida Ettadjouri, and officials from the African Union Commission and AFRIPOL.

Major General Hasnat highlighted the exercise as a testament to the readiness and resolve of African forces. “This field drill comes at a crucial time, following the AU Commission’s confirmation of NARC’s full operational capacity. It sends an unequivocal message about the determination of African states to take charge of their collective security,” he said.

“In the face of accelerating global shifts and a rising tide of internal crises, we are compelled to redouble our efforts and pool our African capabilities to bring to life our guiding principle: African solutions to African problems,” he concluded.

Echoing this vision, NARC’s Executive Secretary reiterated the significance of the exercise in advancing the full activation of the African Standby Force. “This exercise is part of a broader strategic framework to ensure Africa is equipped with the tools to respond effectively to its peace and security challenges,” he stated.

The SALAM NORTH AFRICA III exercise stands as a concrete example of Algeria’s leading role in operationalizing African defense frameworks and promoting genuine continental ownership over security matters. As crises continue to unfold across various regions of the continent, Algeria remains resolutely positioned as a key stabilizing force, advocating for sovereign, African-led responses that honor the principles of unity, cooperation, and peace.
