Algiers, Algeria– Thursday, July 17, 2025 | In a firm and principled reaffirmation of Algeria’s longstanding support for the Sahrawi cause, the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received on Thursday his Sahrawi counterpart, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, Minister of Foreign and African Affairs of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), for a strategic diplomatic meeting in Algiers.

The two senior diplomats conducted in-depth deliberations on the latest international and regional developments surrounding the Western Sahara dossier. At the heart of their discussions was the ongoing struggle of the Sahrawi people to achieve full independence and the realization of their inalienable right to self-determination—an objective grounded in international legality and clearly stipulated in multiple resolutions of both the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council.

The meeting underscored Algeria’s unwavering diplomatic stance in support of decolonization and its rejection of any fait accompli policy that seeks to override the legitimate rights of colonized peoples. Both ministers reiterated the urgent necessity of reviving the political process under the auspices of the United Nations, with a view to reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to freely determine their political future.

Minister Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s continued advocacy at regional and international forums to uphold the principles of international law, particularly the right of peoples to self-determination and the sanctity of post-colonial borders. In turn, Minister Ould Salek expressed deep appreciation for Algeria’s principled position and consistent solidarity, emphasizing that such support plays a crucial role in sustaining the Sahrawi people’s resistance against occupation and political marginalization.

The encounter between Attaf and Ould Salek also highlighted the strategic coordination between Algiers and the Sahrawi authorities, as both sides pledged to intensify diplomatic efforts in Africa and beyond to bring renewed attention to the Sahrawi plight and hold occupying powers accountable for violations of international law and human rights.

This meeting, held in a context of increasing international scrutiny over the Western Sahara conflict, stands as a powerful testament to Algeria’s enduring role as a key actor in defending the rights of oppressed peoples and promoting a multilateral order anchored in justice, legality, and the right to freedom.
