Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria has once again reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to African economic integration, as senior state officials, economic experts, parliamentarians, and representatives of the African diplomatic corps convened in Algiers on Monday for a parliamentary day dedicated to translating continental integration visions into concrete national policies. Organized by the Committee for Economic Affairs, Trade, Industry and Planning of the People’s National Assembly (APN), the meeting underscored the urgency of transforming the continent’s long-standing aspirations for unity into actionable strategies supported by solid legal and institutional frameworks.

In his address, Brahim Boughali, Speaker of the APN, emphasized that Algeria—under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune—has consistently demonstrated that it is “a reliable partner in building a unified African future,” guided by firm positions and decisive initiatives aimed at advancing continental development. This commitment, Boughali stressed, is deeply rooted in Algeria’s African identity and in the belief that Africa’s renaissance can only be achieved through solidarity, unity, and the spirit that shaped the liberation struggles of its peoples.

He underlined that African economic integration is far from a political slogan; it is a comprehensive civilizational project designed to ensure the continent’s economic, food, and energy sovereignty. Achieving this ambition, he argued, requires the convergence of efforts from governments, parliaments, the private sector, and civil society, enabling the translation of visions into programs, and programs into tangible results that serve African citizens.

Boughali recalled that the dream of integration has accompanied Africa since the creation of the Organization of African Unity, and is now embodied in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which he described as a “promising economic space.” He reiterated that Algeria has been among the earliest and strongest supporters of this ambitious initiative, convinced that integration remains the most viable path toward shared development and equitable distribution of growth opportunities.

In this context, he highlighted Algeria’s active participation in major continental events, notably the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025) hosted in Algiers, and announced the country’s preparations to host major African conferences, including one dedicated to local pharmaceutical manufacturing and health technologies—an essential step in reinforcing Africa’s health sovereignty. Algeria is also preparing to host the African Start-Up Conference, cementing its role as a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, and demonstrating its commitment to empowering youth and driving Africa’s digital and economic transformation.

The APN President stressed that successful integration must rest on strong legal and institutional foundations. Continental agreements, he warned, hold little weight unless translated into national legislation and supported by effective implementation mechanisms. This is where African parliaments—armed with legislative and oversight powers—play a central and irreplaceable role.

For her part, Samira Berhoum, Chair of the APN’s Committee on Economic Affairs, emphasized that the objective of this parliamentary day was precisely to unify visions and reinforce collective efforts toward sustainable economic and social development across Africa. She underscored the continent’s immense potential—its abundant natural resources, its dynamic human capital, and its promising economic sectors—while highlighting the strategic guidance of President Tebboune to improve the investment climate, strengthen national industries, and expand economic partnerships.

At the conclusion of the meeting, participants called for harmonizing national initiatives with African legal frameworks, while enhancing logistical capabilities and intensifying efforts in economic development, diversification of revenue sources, and the strengthening of wealth-generating sectors. They also urged the facilitation of access for Algerian enterprises to African markets in both trade and investment, alongside the pursuit of innovative financing solutions.

Participants further stressed the importance of expanding Algeria’s presence in major African economic forums to consolidate its standing within the continental space. They highlighted the necessity of strengthening Algeria’s contribution to the unified African market through the AfCFTA and investing in strategic capacities capable of advancing integration and knowledge transfer across the continent—particularly in energy, electricity, telecommunications, and fiber-optic infrastructure. Through these strategic orientations, Algeria continues to position itself as a decisive actor in shaping the economic future of Africa.
