Algeria Reasserts the Sovereignty of Its Foreign Policy Amid Attempts to Politicize National Positions

Algiers – November 2025 – In a message relayed by the Algerian Press Service (APS), Algeria reaffirmed that the national state has fully recovered its strength, restored its sovereign decision-making capacity, and reclaimed the exclusive authority over all strategic choices—guided solely by national interest and the public good. The statement underscores that a strong and sovereign state cannot be swayed by whims, impulses, or partisan calculations of “whoever feels entitled to speak above their political weight.”
Recalling the tragedies of the 1990s, APS stressed that the dark decade has been definitively left behind, after the Algerian people paid a heavy price resisting conspiracies aimed at striking the foundations of the national state. The resilience of the nation and the solidity of its institutions dismantled every attempt to undermine state sovereignty—a lesson that remains firmly etched in collective memory.
Within this framework, APS reaffirmed that Algeria’s foreign policy is governed strictly by the Constitution, which grants the President of the Republic exclusive mandate and authority to shape, conduct, and represent the country’s external positions. The Constitution also designates the diplomatic corps as the sole institutional apparatus responsible for executing these directives with precision and discipline. No voice, it stated, rises above that of the Constitution, and no source of legitimacy overrides the constitutional foundations of Algeria’s foreign policy.
This clarification comes in response to recent criticism from certain domestic actors attacking Algeria’s diplomatic stance regarding the latest UN Security Council resolution on Palestine—particularly the humanitarian and security situation in the besieged Gaza Strip. APS described these attacks as lacking both substance and even the most basic understanding of diplomatic mechanisms, exposing the true motives and intentions of those behind them. The Algerian public, the statement added, is fully aware that Algeria’s position on Palestine is principled, unwavering, and deeply rooted in historical, moral, and geopolitical constants.
The statement denounced these attempts as a deplorable effort to exploit Algeria’s foreign policy—a core national priority—for narrow political games and opportunistic gains that bear no relation to the supreme national interest. Such manoeuvres, it warned, stand in stark contrast to the ethos of responsible statecraft and fail to meet even the minimal standards of political maturity.
APS further emphasized that political agendas, partisan calculations, and electoral ambitions have absolutely no place in Algeria’s foreign policy. The national state, strong in its institutions and confident in its sovereignty, will not allow its external decisions to become instruments for political bargaining or vehicles for parties seeking relevance through short-sighted manoeuvres.
