Algiers – September 2025 – In a decision that underscores Algeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its education system and recalibrate the place of foreign languages within the national curriculum, the Ministry of National Education has officially unveiled sweeping adjustments to the weekly timetables of French and English classes for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The reform, which comes into force with the start of the school year on 21 September 2025, marks a significant pedagogical shift at three critical educational stages: the third year of primary school, the first year of middle school, and the first year of the literary common-core track in secondary education.

According to a ministerial note dated 9 September 2025 and circulated to regional directors, school inspectors, and principals in both public and private institutions, the objective is to strike a new balance between the two foreign languages, in line with the recently introduced English program for first-year middle school students.

From next autumn, middle school students in their first year will benefit from 3 hours and 30 minutes of French and an identical allocation of 3 hours and 30 minutes of English each week. This parity signals a clear reconfiguration of linguistic priorities, consolidating English as a core subject alongside French in Algeria’s evolving academic landscape.

The primary cycle has also been affected. Third-year pupils will now have 2 hours of English per week, placing it on equal footing with French, while Arabic has been slightly reinforced to 7 hours and 30 minutes. Physical education has been increased to two hours weekly, and artistic education will gain an additional 45 minutes, reflecting a broader vision of holistic education.

In secondary education, however, the ministry has opted for a recalibration that reduces the weekly allocation of French in the first-year literary track from 5 to 4 hours. This decision appears to align with a gradual reorientation toward multilingualism, as English continues to gain strategic importance in the context of globalization and international competitiveness.
