Algeria Reinforces Commitment to Green Aviation and Renewable Energy Transition

Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 —  Algeria reaffirmed its strategic commitment to sustainable development and energy transition during an international conference on the environment and sustainable aviation held in Algiers on Saturday, June 14, 2025. The event, held under the theme “Sustainability in Mind, for a Greener Aviation”, was organized by Air Algérie and brought together ministers, senior executives, and global experts to exchange forward-looking solutions for green aviation.

Representing the Ministry of Energy and Mines, State Secretary in charge of Renewable Energies, Dr. Nourredine Yassaa, took part in the high-level forum alongside Algeria’s Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Nadjiba Djilali, Minister of Transport Said Sayoud, and Customs Director General Major General Abdelhafid Bakhouche. The gathering also saw active participation from major national and international institutions operating in the aviation, environmental, and transport sectors.

In his keynote address, Dr. Yassaa stressed that the meeting served as a critical platform for building synergies and advancing collective efforts to green the aviation sector—a domain increasingly under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint amid escalating climate challenges.

Highlighting Algeria’s ambition and leadership in renewable energy deployment, Yassaa recalled the nation’s ambitious national strategy aiming to generate 15,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity by 2035. As of the end of 2023, Algeria had already installed 600 MW, delivering concrete environmental dividends such as reduced fossil fuel consumption and a measurable decrease in CO₂ emissions.

The first implementation phase, he said, includes 3,200 MW across 20 solar power plants nationwide, as well as a strategic solar station in Tindouf, designed to meet the energy needs of the region and support the Gara Djebilet mining megaproject.

Yassaa also underlined Algeria’s pioneering initiatives in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), including pilot projects for the production of green kerosene and methanol. These efforts are expected to slash aviation emissions by up to 80%, aligning with internationally recognized standards.

Moreover, he highlighted the national green hydrogen strategy, structured around seven core pillars, encompassing regulatory frameworks, research and innovation, and international collaboration. Among these, the TaqatHy+ program with the European Union and the SoutH2 Corridor project are designed to enable transcontinental export of Algerian hydrogen to Europe, placing Algeria at the heart of the global clean energy transition.

Dr. Yassaa concluded by reaffirming his department’s unwavering support for Air Algérie’s vision of a green aviation future, pledging to supply clean energy, foster technological innovation, and build national capacities to position Algeria as a regional leader in sustainable energy and low-carbon aviation.
