Algeria Reinforces Its Strategic Energy Role at “Verso Sud” Forum in Italy

Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab leads a high-level delegation to the 4th edition of the international “Verso Sud” forum in Sorrento, outlining Algeria’s vision for a sustainable energy transition and Mediterranean cooperation.

Algiers, Algeria | May 15th, 2025 —  At the invitation of The European House – Ambrosetti, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, is participating in the 4th edition of the international “Verso Sud” Forum, held under the high patronage of the Italian Government in the city of Sorrento, Italy.

The forum, held under the theme “Towards the South: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Era in the Mediterranean,” serves as a prominent platform for regional cooperation and strategic dialogue. Minister Arkab is accompanied by a high-level Algerian delegation, including Rachid Hachichi, CEO of Sonatrach, and Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgaz, alongside senior officials from the energy sector.

During a high-level session titled “The Strategic Role of the Mediterranean in the Global Energy Transition: Achievements and Strategies,” Minister Arkab is presenting Algeria’s national vision for a sustainable and inclusive energy transition, firmly rooted in regional cooperation and sustainable development goals. His address reaffirms Algeria’s position as a reliable and indispensable partner in ensuring regional energy security, particularly within the context of evolving European energy initiatives.

This participation aligns with Italy’s growing ambition to revitalize its strategic role in the Mediterranean, particularly through the implementation of the Mattei Plan—a comprehensive framework launched by the Italian government to establish a new, balanced, and long-term partnership between Europe and Africa. The Mattei Plan prioritizes key sectors such as energy, education, infrastructure, and agriculture, areas in which Algeria’s geostrategic location and substantial energy resources position it as a pivotal actor.

The 2025 edition of the “Verso Sud” Forum is marked by the presence of high-profile political and economic figures, including Fabrizio Saggio, diplomatic advisor to the Italian Prime Minister and coordinator of the Mattei Plan, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Italy’s Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Francesco Lollobrigida, Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests of Italy, and Luis Planas, Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The forum also gathers diplomats, CEOs of major institutions, and experts from prominent Mediterranean think tanks.

The event aims to build a permanent strategic consultation platform that fosters public-private collaboration at both national and international levels. It brings together leading economic, institutional, and academic stakeholders to develop realistic and sustainable partnerships that promote stability and prosperity in the Mediterranean basin.

Forum discussions will tackle pressing geopolitical shifts and their economic and social impacts, including food security, environmental transformations, and the evolving energy vision in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. The region’s key role in realizing Europe’s new cooperation framework with Africa will also be at the forefront, underscoring the necessity for balanced, responsible, and mutually beneficial partnerships.
