Algeria Responds to Mali’s Denunciation of the Algiers Accord: Call for Peace, Reconciliation

ALGIERS- In a recent development, Algeria has expressed deep regret and concern in response to the decision by Malian authorities to denounce the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali, stemming from the Algiers process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement emphasizing the gravity of this decision, not only for Mali but also for regional peace, security, and the global community that invested significant efforts in aiding Mali’s stability through national reconciliation.

Acknowledging Mali’s decision, Algeria underscores its duty to inform the brotherly Malian people. The statement reaffirms Algeria’s unwavering commitment to the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement, emphasizing sincerity, good faith, and steadfast solidarity with Mali.

Addressing the reasons cited for the denunciation, the Ministry asserts that the lengthy list provided by Malian authorities does not align with the truth or reality. Algeria encourages the Malian people to recognize its consistent dedication to the peace process.

Notably, the Ministry highlights that signs of Mali’s withdrawal from the Accord’s implementation, rejection of initiatives to revitalize it, contestation of international mediation integrity, labeling of recognized Accord signatories as terrorist leaders, calls for MINUSMA withdrawal, increased arms programs funded by external entities, and engagement of international mercenaries were evident precursors to the recent decision.

The Ministry warns that opting for a military approach over a political one poses a significant threat to Mali’s unity and territorial integrity. It emphasizes that such decisions historically delay national reconciliation, increase the risk of civil war, and pose a real threat to regional peace and stability.

Concluding the statement, the Ministry asserts that Mali, a country in need of peace and reconciliation, should avoid repeating past mistakes that led to division, destruction, and despair. It calls for learning from history to prevent prolonging the tragedy and hardships faced by the Malian people.
