Algeria Rises 15 Spots in Global ICT Development Index, Outperforming Regional and Global Averages

Strategic National Efforts Under President Tebboune’s Vision Drive Algeria to 74th Position Worldwide in 2025 ITU Ranking

Algiers, Algeria | July 2nd, 2025 — Algeria has made a significant leap in the global digital landscape, climbing 15 places in the latest edition of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Development Index published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in June 2025. The country now ranks 74th globally, up from 89th in the previous edition, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications.

The ITU’s index, widely regarded as the leading global benchmark for measuring ICT progress, evaluates countries based on a composite of connectivity indicators—most notably comprehensive connectivity (household and individual internet access) and targeted connectivity (efficient and affordable internet use across sectors). Algeria scored an impressive 86.1 points, placing it well above the global average of 78 points, the Arab regional average of 77.6 points, the African average of 56.1 points, and even the average for upper-middle-income countries, which stands at 81.1 points.

This marked improvement is a testament to Algeria’s robust national efforts to expand and democratize digital access. It also highlights the success of the government’s strategic initiatives to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive development through smart investments in infrastructure, education, and digital services.

According to the Ministry, this progress “reflects the tangible outcomes of the visionary strategy outlined by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at extending the reach of information and communication technologies across the country’s vast territory to the benefit of all citizens.”
