Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria has consolidated its position as an agricultural force in both the Arab world and the African continent, securing the second rank among the largest barley producers for the 2024/2025 season. With an estimated output of 1.2 million tonnes, the country demonstrates a significant leap in its cereal production capacity, according to data published by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Regionally, Algeria stands just behind Iraq, whose barley production reached 1.4 million tonnes during the same agricultural campaign. This ranking reflects Algeria’s steady emergence as a key contributor to cereal output in the Arab region, driven by improved cultivation techniques, expanded agricultural zones, and resilience in the face of climatic unpredictability.

On the African front, Algeria also occupies the second position, trailing Ethiopia, which recorded an impressive harvest of 2.48 million tonnes. The performance of both countries demonstrates the growing strategic importance of barley in their respective agricultural sectors, particularly in food security planning, livestock feeding systems, and domestic market stabilisation.

The report highlights that Algeria’s barley production for the 2024/2025 season has surged by 17 percent compared to the previous year. Output climbed from 1.03 million tonnes in 2023/2024 to 1.23 million tonnes—a substantial increase that underscores the efficiency of national agricultural strategies and state-backed efforts to boost grain production despite variable weather conditions.

Globally, barley output reached approximately 143.33 million tonnes, marking a slight decline of 0.13 percent compared to the 143.51 million tonnes recorded during the 2023/2024 season. Although global production remains relatively stable, Algeria’s upward trajectory stands out as a noteworthy achievement within broader international trends.
