Algeria-Russia Academic Partnership: Strengthening University Cooperation and Cultural Exchange

Algiers – October 2025 – The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Algeria, Alexeï Solomatine, emphasized on Thursday the critical importance of deepening academic cooperation and expanding exchanges between Algerian and Russian universities. His remarks came during an official visit to Oran 2 University Mohamed Benahmed, where he underscored Russia’s commitment to supporting Algerian institutions that teach the Russian language, notably the university’s Language Institute, which currently enrolls 200 students in Russian studies.
In a concrete demonstration of this cooperation, four students from Moscow State University of Humanities and Linguistics have recently arrived at Oran 2 University under a bilateral exchange agreement. A second group of four Russian students is expected shortly. These students will pursue studies across Arabic, French, and English language programs, as well as in law and international relations, reinforcing cross-cultural academic ties between the two nations.
Ambassador Solomatine also expressed his admiration for Algeria’s rich cultural heritage and pledged to actively promote Algerian tourism among Russian visitors, highlighting the country’s stunning natural landscapes as a unique point of attraction.
Professor Ahmed Chalal, Rector of Oran 2 University, recalled that his institution had, two years ago, signed cooperation agreements with multiple Russian universities, including Moscow State University and Chelny University. These agreements have already facilitated bilateral student exchanges, providing a platform for long-term academic collaboration. On the prospect of combining language studies with tourism training, Pr. Chalal indicated plans to train students in Russian language skills tailored to the tourism sector, further bridging education with Algeria’s economic and cultural priorities.
