Algeria, Russia Deepen Energy and Mining Partnership: Minister Arkab Receives GEOTEK President

Algiers, Algeria | June 26th, 2025 — In a strategic move aimed at bolstering Algeria’s energy and mining sectors, the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, received on Thursday, Roman Panov, President of the Russian geophysical exploration company GEOTEK. The high-level meeting took place at the ministry’s headquarters in Algiers.

The audience was attended by Karima Tafer, Secretary of State in charge of Mines, Belkacem Soltani, CEO of Sonarem, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, Sonatrach, Sonarem, and the National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT).

A Roadmap for Technological Collaboration

The discussions focused on mechanisms to strengthen bilateral cooperation in geological research and exploration of both hydrocarbons and minerals. The objective, clearly outlined by both sides, is to pave the way for joint ventures involving national giants such as Sonatrach and Sonarem, in partnership with GEOTEK.

During the meeting, the Russian delegation delivered two comprehensive technical presentations. The first detailed GEOTEK’s advanced capabilities in onshore and offshore hydrocarbon exploration, highlighting the use of cutting-edge geophysical analysis and seismic surveying technologies. The second focused on deep mineral exploration, geological mapping, 3D modeling of subsoil formations, and the development of specialized equipment for seismic data acquisition and sample analysis.

Minister Arkab welcomed this collaborative approach, emphasizing Algeria’s commitment to accelerating exploration efforts and fully leveraging its immense geological wealth. “The integration of advanced technologies and scientific expertise into our exploration programs is a strategic priority,” he stated. “Our ministry will continue to support all initiatives based on knowledge transfer, innovation, and data-driven analysis.”

GEOTEK’s Commitment to Algeria

For his part, Roman Panov expressed GEOTEK’s strong interest in expanding its footprint in Algeria, praising the country’s attractive investment environment. He stressed GEOTEK’s longstanding expertise—spanning over three decades across Russia, Central Asia, and the Middle East—and reaffirmed the company’s readiness to transfer its technological know-how and train Algerian professionals.

Next Steps: Concrete Technical Engagement

At the conclusion of the talks, both parties agreed to establish a framework for continued technical engagement. Specialized working meetings between experts from GEOTEK, Sonatrach, and Sonarem will be held in the coming weeks. These sessions will cover exploration strategies, geoscientific data interpretation, and the development of advanced geological studies, with the aim of launching tangible cooperation projects in the near future.
