Transport Minister Hails Recovery of Detained Vessels Abroad and Launch of “Saoura” Ship’s First Trade Mission to Egypt

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In a declaration signaling the resurgence of Algeria’s maritime trade capacities, Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud confirmed on Algerian International Radio that the country has successfully revived its national commercial fleet, reclaiming vessels long held abroad and recommitting to strategic maritime operations.

Among the most notable achievements cited by Minister Sayoud is the recovery of the vessel “Sedrata,” which had been impounded at the port of Antwerp (Onvers), Belgium, for nearly three years due to unresolved administrative and legal issues. “The ship has finally left the port yesterday, en route to Algerian territorial waters,” announced Sayoud, marking what he described as a moment of maritime sovereignty regained.

The reclamation of Sedrata is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry to rehabilitate and revalorize Algeria’s national maritime fleet, which had suffered years of underinvestment and operational neglect. Several other Algerian vessels previously detained in foreign ports have also been retrieved, demonstrating what Sayoud called “a firm will to restore Algeria’s rightful position in international maritime commerce.”

This national effort does not stop at recovery. Minister Sayoud also unveiled the deployment of the Algerian ship “Saoura” to Egypt in what constitutes its first commercial voyage following a comprehensive overhaul and repair operation in Turkey. “This is more than a trade mission,” he stressed. “It is a symbol of resilience, of our country’s capacity to bounce back and reclaim its logistical autonomy.”

The launch of “Saoura” to Egypt is emblematic of Algeria’s strategic vision to deepen commercial ties with neighboring and partner countries while reducing its reliance on foreign logistics and shipping services. It also sends a strong message to the international maritime industry: Algeria is rebuilding and returning as a serious maritime actor.

Minister Sayoud emphasized that these actions are not isolated gestures but part of a long-term strategy to strengthen Algeria’s maritime infrastructure, enhance cargo transport capacity, and boost national exports through sovereign logistical routes. “Rehabilitating our fleet is a matter of economic security and national pride,” he stated.
