Algeria, Saudi Arabia Strengthen Bilateral Security Cooperation through High-Level Police Engagement

Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 15, 2025 | Algeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have taken a significant step toward deepening their strategic security partnership, as the Director of Public Security of the Kingdom, Lieutenant General Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Bassami, led a high-ranking delegation on a working visit to Algiers on Monday. The visit focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in policing, criminal investigations, cybercrime prevention, and scientific forensics, with a view to consolidating regional stability and addressing emerging transnational threats.

The Saudi delegation was received at the headquarters of Algeria’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), where Lieutenant General Al-Bassami held bilateral discussions with DGSN Director General Ali Badaoui. The talks were later expanded to include senior officials from both sides, marking a moment of renewed diplomatic momentum between the two countries in the security domain.

During the meeting, both parties underscored the imperative of intensifying collaboration in critical areas, such as specialized police training, forensic science, cybercrime detection, and cross-border organized crime prevention. They also examined mechanisms for enhanced information-sharing, operational coordination, and the institutionalization of knowledge exchange.

Toward a formal security cooperation framework

Ali Badaoui reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to fostering deeper security ties with the Kingdom, stressing the importance of formalizing this partnership through a bilateral agreement or a memorandum of understanding. “Such a framework,” Badaoui asserted, “would establish a robust institutional basis for joint action, allowing both sides to respond more effectively to contemporary criminal threats in a rapidly evolving security environment.”

He added that joint training programs, reciprocal visits, and cooperative investigations would serve not only to build trust but also to consolidate shared expertise and advance mutual policing objectives.

Saudi Arabia lauds historic ties and shared security vision

For his part, General Al-Bassami hailed the enduring fraternal relations between Algeria and Saudi Arabia and expressed his strong desire to see cooperation in policing elevated to unprecedented levels. He emphasized the need to harness joint capacities to confront transnational criminal phenomena with technological sophistication and strategic foresight.

As part of the visit, the Saudi delegation toured the Central Laboratory of Scientific and Technical Police in Châteauneuf, where they received a comprehensive technical briefing on the laboratory’s state-of-the-art forensic equipment, its role in supporting criminal investigations, and its contribution to enhancing Algeria’s police capabilities through advanced crime scene analysis and digital evidence processing.

The visit continued at the Command and Control Center of the Algiers Wilaya Security Directorate. There, the Saudi officials observed Algeria’s cutting-edge video surveillance systems and other technological solutions deployed to monitor urban areas, track criminal activity, and enforce traffic regulations. The delegation was also introduced to the DGSN’s intelligent policing applications, which have enhanced field operations through real-time data integration and predictive analytics.

This visit reinforces Algeria’s status as a key regional partner in Gulf-African security diplomacy, particularly at a time when cyber threats, transnational crime networks, and the need for smart policing are reshaping internal security strategies across the Arab world.
