Algeria, Saudi Arabia Strengthen Strategic Cooperation in Seawater Desalination, Water Security

The meeting focused on exploring cooperation and investment opportunities in the field of seawater desalination, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines.
The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Algeria, Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Bussairi, the Chairman and CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, the CEO of Algerian Desalination Company (ADC), Lahcen Bada, as well as senior ministry officials. Discussions centered on strengthening cooperation in seawater desalination and related infrastructure within the framework of Algeriaโs national desalination program, while examining avenues through which experienced international companies can contribute to the implementation of Algeriaโs strategic projects aimed at enhancing water security. These efforts were framed within the context of the privileged relations of friendship and fraternity binding Algeria and Saudi Arabia.
During the meeting, Minister Arkab outlined the main pillars of the national seawater desalination program, implemented in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The program aims to construct new desalination plants to cover nearly 62 percent of Algeriaโs national drinking water needs outside groundwater resources. It prioritizes ensuring water security and supplying high-density population areas and the High Plateaus, with a requirement to transport desalinated water over distances of at least 250 kilometers from the coastline.
The discussions also highlighted the expertise of WETICO (Water and Environment Technologies Company), a subsidiary of Abunayyan Holding, which has already contributed to the construction of several desalination plants in Algeria, notably in Bรฉjaรฏa, El Tarf, and Cap Djinet. This experience was cited as evidence of the advanced level of cooperation and accumulated expertise in this strategic sector.
For his part, the CEO of Abunayyan Holding expressed the groupโs strong interest in expanding its industrial presence in Algeria. He conveyed the companyโs intention to localize the manufacturing of equipment and installations used in seawater desalination, including the production of desalination plant membranes, as well as other components and equipment associated with water production and treatment chains.
Ambassador Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Bussairi further emphasized the groupโs readiness to explore opportunities for technology transfer and the development of local industrial partnerships. These initiatives align with Algeriaโs strategic orientation toward increasing national integration rates and strengthening its industrial fabric in key sectors, the statement concluded.
