Algeria Secures Key United Nations Positions, Strengthening Its Multilateral Influence
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria has consolidated its diplomatic standing within the United Nations system following its election to several strategic bodies under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, in a development that underscores the country’s expanding role in global governance frameworks.
During ECOSOC proceedings held in New York on 8 April 2026, Algeria was elected as a member of the Organizational Committee of the Peacebuilding Commission for the 2027–2029 term, as well as to the United Nations Statistical Commission for the 2027–2030 mandate. These appointments place Algeria at the heart of key international mechanisms tasked with post-conflict stabilization and the development of global statistical standards.
In parallel, Algeria achieved a significant individual election through the selection of Professor Younes Zebbiche as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board for the 2027–2032 term. His election, secured with 36 votes out of 54—well above the required majority of 28—positioned him second among elected candidates, reflecting broad international confidence in Algeria’s expertise in this domain.
The International Narcotics Control Board, an independent and quasi-judicial body, plays a central role in overseeing the implementation of United Nations drug control conventions. Its mandate encompasses preventing the diversion of controlled substances into illicit channels, ensuring their availability for medical and scientific purposes, and monitoring state compliance with international treaties.
Members of the Board are elected by ECOSOC in their personal capacity, based on recognized competence, professional integrity, and specialized expertise. In this context, the election of Professor Zebbiche constitutes both an individual distinction and a broader institutional endorsement of Algeria’s sustained engagement in combating transnational drug challenges.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these successive elections reflect a growing recognition of Algeria’s active contribution to international efforts in peacebuilding, statistical governance, and drug control. They also highlight the country’s accumulated experience and the strategic priority accorded by national authorities to addressing complex global issues through coordinated policy frameworks and sustained resource mobilization.
Taken together, these appointments reinforce Algeria’s positioning as a credible and proactive actor within multilateral institutions, capable of contributing substantively to the formulation and implementation of international norms across critical domains of global governance.
