Algeria Sets a Historic Precedent with the Inaugural African School Games

Algiers, Algeria | From July 26 to August 5, 2025, Algeria became the beating heart of African youth sports, hosting the first-ever African School Games (JAS) — an unprecedented event that brought together young athletes from 51 nations, setting a landmark in the continent’s sporting history. Under the high patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, this historic gathering was the product of a joint initiative between the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA) and the International School Sport Federation (ISF), following an agreement signed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

ACNOA President Mustapha Berraf lauded Algeria as the “exemplary host of an ambitious collective project,” declaring that the nation had not only fulfilled but exceeded expectations by laying the foundations of a tradition destined to endure. The African sports body, in recognition of this achievement, awarded a gold medal to President Tebboune for his decisive support in both organizing the Games and revitalizing school sports in Algeria.

The event showcased Algeria’s unparalleled mobilization of resources — from world-class infrastructure to comprehensive cultural hospitality — ensuring that every aspect of the Games reflected professionalism and unity. For eight days, the competitions revealed exceptional talent and set new records across various disciplines, underscoring the immense potential of Africa’s rising generation of athletes.

Beyond the athletic feats, the JAS became a vibrant platform for intercultural exchange. Cultural evenings at the athletes’ village fostered camaraderie, while moments of pure sportsmanship — such as the viral image of a competitor helping an injured rival cross the finish line — resonated across the continent. ACNOA hailed the event as a “laboratory of African unity,” proving that school sports can be a powerful instrument of integration, respect, and solidarity among nations.

As the closing ceremony drew to a close, the symbolic torch was passed to Nigeria, which will host the second edition in 2027. Nigerian Sports Minister pledged to uphold and advance the standard of excellence set in Algiers, while ACNOA announced the Games’ official adoption into a biennial cycle, securing their place as a flagship event in Africa’s sporting calendar.

For Algeria, the legacy of these Games is already taking root, with plans underway to institutionalize a nationwide school sports program. For ACNOA, the African School Games now stand as a strategic lever to nurture future champions and cultivate an Olympic generation — a vision born in Algiers and destined to inspire the entire continent.
