State Secretary Nourreddine Yassa presents Algeria’s national hydrogen strategy and investment potential to global energy leaders

Algiers, Algeria | May 20th, 2025 — Algeria marked a notable presence at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition 2025, held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from May 20 to 23, with a high-level delegation led by Nourreddine Yassa, State Secretary to the Minister of Energy in charge of Renewable Energies. The delegation included officials from the Ministry of Energy and senior executives from Sonatrach.

At the heart of the event, Algeria inaugurated a national pavilion that highlighted the country’s immense potential in the field of green hydrogen, its ongoing projects, and attractive investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The Algerian stand drew considerable interest from visitors, experts, and representatives of international organizations and global energy firms.

On the opening day, Mr. Yassa took part in the official inauguration ceremony, in the presence of Algeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as well as energy ministers, representatives of international institutions, and global energy leaders. He delivered a keynote speech titled: “The Hydrogen Economy in Algeria”, in which he detailed the national vision and strategic roadmap for developing this promising sector.

At the beginning of his address, Mr. Yassa emphasized that energy transition and sustainable development lie at the core of Algeria’s economic policy, serving as pillars for ensuring energy security, diversifying the national economy, and creating high-value jobs.

He stressed that Algeria, with its strategic geographical location, abundant natural resources, advanced energy infrastructure, and longstanding expertise in the energy sector, possesses the necessary credentials to emerge as a key player in the global hydrogen market and a reliable supplier of clean energy to Europe—a role it has already played for decades in natural gas exports.

Mr. Yassa outlined the six main pillars of Algeria’s national strategy for developing the hydrogen economy and reviewed the four pilot projects currently underway to test various green hydrogen applications. He also highlighted a semi-industrial project with a capacity of 50 megawatts, marking a crucial step toward large-scale production.

In addition, he showcased Algeria’s growing international partnerships, especially with the European Union and Germany, through the “TaqatY” and “TaqatY+” initiatives. He also underlined the importance of the “Southern Hydrogen Corridor” (SoutH2 Corridor), a trans-Mediterranean project linking Algeria with Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany to facilitate the export of green hydrogen across Europe.

On the sidelines of the summit, Mr. Yassa held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy of South Africa, where both parties discussed prospects for cooperation in renewable energies and green hydrogen. They agreed to explore joint project opportunities and mutual investment possibilities.

He also welcomed the Director General of Hydrogen and Circular Carbon Economy at the Ministry of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where discussions focused on boosting cooperation in green and blue hydrogen production, storage, and transport, with an emphasis on knowledge exchange and building strategic partnerships in this promising sector.
