Nourredine Yassaa Presents Algeria’s Strategic Roadmap and Continental Leadership Role in Energy Transition During High-Level Panels in Cape Town

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 — Representing Algeria at the Africa Energy Forum 2025 in Cape Town, Nourredine Yassaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Energy, in charge of Renewable Energies, reaffirmed Algeria’s growing leadership in the continental energy transition by presenting the nation’s ambitious clean energy roadmap, while also outlining its strategic vision to become a major exporter of green electricity.

Speaking during the high-level panel session entitled “Accelerating the Next Generation of Utility-Scale Solar Projects”, Yassaa emphasized Algeria’s commitment to developing a robust and diversified renewable energy sector. He highlighted the country’s national strategy, centered on achieving 15,000 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity by 2035. The first phase of this plan, currently underway, includes 3,200 MW of installed capacity across 20 new solar plants, with outputs ranging from 50 to 300 MW per plant, strategically distributed across the national territory.

Yassaa stressed the government’s priority to foster robust public-private partnerships, develop a transparent regulatory framework, and deepen industrial integration by encouraging the local manufacturing of renewable energy components, thereby creating a dynamic national ecosystem.

The Algerian official further underlined Algeria’s geostrategic positioning as a vital energy bridge between Africa and Europe, capable of exporting clean electricity and contributing decisively to regional energy security. “Algeria is fully prepared to serve as a green energy hub for the continent, with an open door to Europe,” Yassaa stated.

Participating in the ministerial Q&A session, Yassaa provided insights into Algeria’s current and future projects, addressing critical issues such as financing mechanisms, international partnerships, and the development of green hydrogen as a transformative clean energy vector. He also shared Algeria’s innovative responses to the technical and regulatory challenges facing large-scale renewable energy deployment.

On the sidelines of the forum, Yassaa held a series of bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening Algeria’s international energy diplomacy.

He met with Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Mr. Edgar Moyo, where discussions focused on exchanging technological expertise in renewables and green hydrogen, as well as exploring avenues for cooperation in research and training.

In a meeting with Ms. Lerato Dorothy Mataboge, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, the two parties examined mechanisms for deeper Algeria-AU collaboration, particularly in building regional cooperation platforms to facilitate technical knowledge-sharing.

Yassaa also held talks with Mr. Jon Humphrey, UK Commissioner for African Affairs at the Department for Business and Trade, where they discussed the future of Algeria–UK strategic cooperation in renewables and green hydrogen. The dialogue explored green financing solutions and innovative investment instruments to accelerate energy transition initiatives.
