Algiers, Algeria | September 17th, 2024 At the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Algerian Permanent Representative to Vienna, Ambassador Larbi Latroche, inaugurated Algeria’s stand, showcasing the country’s significant strides in peaceful nuclear technology. The conference, running from September 16 to 20 in the Austrian capital, provides a platform for Algeria to present its advancements and commitments in nuclear science.

The inauguration ceremony, attended by Shaukat Abdulrazak, the representative of the IAEA Director General, Rachedi Menadi, President of the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security, and Abdelhamid Mellah, Commissioner for Atomic Energy, highlighted Algeria’s achievements in various sectors including health, agriculture, food security, water resources, and environmental protection. Ambassador Latroche emphasized the country’s advancements in cancer treatment, particularly in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. He underscored Algeria’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with the IAEA, particularly through its regional centers of excellence such as the Pierre and Marie Curie Center (CPMC) and the Nuclear Medicine Center at Bab El Oued University Hospital. These institutions have been designated as regional collaboration centers under the “Rayons d’Espoir” initiative, which supports cancer treatment efforts across Africa.

Latroche also highlighted Algeria’s dedication to furthering the expertise of African nations through the Regional Cooperation Agreement for Africa (AFRA), which focuses on research, development, and training in nuclear science and technology.

In his remarks, Shaukat Abdulrazak lauded Algeria for its remarkable progress in utilizing nuclear applications for development goals and its proactive role in enhancing the capabilities of African nations. He praised the country’s contributions to the “Rayons d’Espoir” initiative and other IAEA programs aimed at promoting peaceful nuclear technology.
