Algeria Slams Zionist Entity’s Aggression Against Iran at UN Emergency Session

Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 — In a powerful statement during an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, convened to address the recent hostile developments in Iran, Algeria voiced strong condemnation of the Zionist entity’s latest military aggression, describing it as a deliberate, unlawful, and extremely dangerous act that violates the sovereignty of a member state and threatens regional security.

Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, described the airstrikes carried out by the Zionist entity against Iranian military and civilian infrastructure as a flagrant breach of the UN Charter and international law, emphasizing that the use of force in such a context is both unjustifiable and reckless.

“This is a grave and premeditated act of aggression, which constitutes a blatant violation of the foundational principles of this Council,” Bendjama stated, warning of the serious risk of wider regional escalation. He added that Algeria had long warned of the consequences of the repeated provocations and destabilizing behavior of the Zionist entity, whose impunity has emboldened further aggression.

Rejecting all claims by the Zionist entity that its actions were driven by legitimate security concerns, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear activities, Bendjama pointed out the glaring contradiction:
“Iran remains under the safeguards and inspection regime of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), while the Zionist entity continues to defy the international community by refusing to accede to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and evading all forms of global nuclear oversight.”

Bendjama further stressed the grave humanitarian and environmental risks posed by such attacks, especially if aimed at or near nuclear facilities. He cited warnings issued by the IAEA on the catastrophic consequences of a military strike targeting a civilian nuclear plant.

He also questioned the timing of this dangerous escalation, noting that it comes amid ongoing indirect talks between Tehran and Washington—mediated by the Sultanate of Oman—aimed at restoring nuclear negotiations and reducing tensions.

“Such actions threaten to derail every effort towards diplomatic resolution,” he said.

Calling the strike an unlawful act, Bendjama underscored:

“In the absence of a legitimate self-defense claim or a Security Council mandate, this aggression by the Zionist entity lacks any legal foundation and constitutes a serious affront to the rules-based international order.”

The Algerian ambassador concluded by urging the Council not to remain passive in the face of this growing disregard for international law.

“The continued impunity with which the Zionist entity operates—unbound by rules, and unchecked by accountability—is a threat to global peace, and this Council must act accordingly.”

Algeria reaffirmed its principled stance in favor of peaceful resolution through multilateral diplomacy and reiterated its support for all nations resisting unlawful aggression and seeking to uphold their sovereign rights under the framework of the United Nations.
