President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s official visit to Ljubljana marks a turning point in Algerian-Slovenian relations, underscored by political dialogue, economic cooperation, solidarity on international issues, and a firm pledge to deepen ties between the Maghreb and Europe.

Algiers, Algeria | May 13th, 2025 — In a milestone for Algerian foreign diplomacy, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune concluded a pivotal state visit to the Republic of Slovenia on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, upon the official invitation of Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar. The Algerian Head of State was welcomed in Ljubljana with full ceremonial honors, reflecting the high regard accorded to Algeria’s growing strategic importance in Europe and the Mediterranean.

 

Upon arrival at the Presidential Palace in Ljubljana, President Tebboune was greeted with an official welcome by President Pirc Musar, including the ceremonial guard of the Slovenian Republic. This visit, carried out in the presence of an important ministerial delegation, marked a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.

The President’s itinerary began with a solemn tribute to the victims of war. In an act laden with symbolism and diplomacy, President Tebboune laid a wreath at the Congress Square memorial stele, paying his respects while the Slovenian Republican Guard rendered military honors. This gesture reflected Algeria’s enduring commitment to peace, human dignity, and historical memory.

Strategic Talks with Slovenian Leadership

President Tebboune engaged in an intensive diplomatic program including one-on-one talks with Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar, followed by expanded bilateral discussions that brought together key ministers from both nations.

In a joint statement, President Tebboune praised the “total convergence” between Algeria and Slovenia on a wide array of international and strategic issues. “We have found complete harmony in our views on migration, artificial intelligence, space cooperation, water resources, and environmental challenges,” he declared, signaling a major diplomatic alignment between the two nations.

The Algerian leader also held an official meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob at the Presidential Palace. The two leaders jointly presided over the signing of a series of important agreements and memoranda of understanding covering multiple sectors, including energy, technology, and higher education. A joint declaration was also signed, further institutionalizing the cooperation framework between Algiers and Ljubljana.

Algeria: A Reliable Energy Partner for Europe

President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s status as a trusted energy supplier, emphasizing the country’s readiness to meet Slovenia’s natural gas needs. “Algeria is a reliable partner and will remain unaffected by future geopolitical shifts,” he asserted. This pronouncement not only reassures European partners but also positions Algeria as a critical energy player in the region’s post-crisis transition.

Political Solidarity: Palestine and Western Sahara

The President commended Slovenia’s courageous and principled stance on the Palestinian issue, noting that Slovenia is the first European state to officially recognize the State of Palestine. “This is a great honor,” Tebboune affirmed. “We hope it will set a precedent for other nations to follow.”

He also lauded Slovenia’s position on the Western Sahara, reiterating Algeria’s unwavering support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination under United Nations supervision through a referendum. “We call for a mutually acceptable solution that respects international legality and the aspirations of the Sahrawi people,” he stated.

Meeting with the Algerian Diaspora in Slovenia

Demonstrating his continued engagement with Algerian nationals abroad, President Tebboune met with members of the Algerian community residing in Slovenia. The gathering took place in the heart of Ljubljana, where citizens, draped in the national colors, welcomed the President with warmth and jubilation. Cries of “Vive âmmi Tebboune” echoed through the crowd, as emotional scenes unfolded with youyous from Algerian women and handshakes exchanged with the Head of State.

President Tebboune acknowledged their patriotism and reassured them of the Algerian state’s commitment to safeguarding their interests and strengthening their connection to the homeland.
