President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s historic state visit to Ljubljana ushers in a new era of comprehensive cooperation, as Algeria and Slovenia align diplomatically and economically in pursuit of a just international order and sustainable bilateral development.

Algiers, Algeria | May 15th, 2025 —  President Abdelmadjid Tebboune concluded, on Wednesday afternoon, a momentous state visit to the Republic of Slovenia, undertaken at the invitation of his Slovenian counterpart, President Nataša Pirc Musar. The visit, imbued with high diplomatic symbolism and strategic intent, marks a defining milestone in the deepening of Algerian-Slovenian relations and sets the tone for a durable partnership grounded in shared principles and mutual respect.

Upon arrival in Ljubljana, President Tebboune was welcomed with full honors, reflecting the depth of bilateral ties and the political will from both sides to elevate cooperation to unprecedented levels. Accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising key ministers and prominent economic figures, President Tebboune’s visit underscored Algeria’s unwavering commitment to forging robust, multi-sectoral alliances with likeminded nations.

Diplomatic Convergence and Shared Global Outlook

President Tebboune held intensive talks with President Musar, Prime Minister Robert Golob, and the Speaker of the Slovenian National Assembly. These high-level meetings were marked by a remarkable convergence of views on a range of pressing international issues, most notably the situation in the Middle East, the question of Western Sahara, and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

President Tebboune hailed Slovenia’s principled and morally coherent foreign policy, particularly its bold stance in favor of oppressed peoples. He paid tribute to Slovenia for being the first European Union member state to officially recognize the State of Palestine, describing the move as “a great honor and a testament to moral clarity and political courage.” He further commended Slovenia’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, in line with United Nations resolutions, characterizing the position as “just, faithful to international legality, and reflective of Slovenia’s ethical diplomacy.”

This alignment reaffirms Algeria’s long-standing diplomatic doctrine—centered on peaceful resolution of conflicts, mediation, and the inviolability of state sovereignty—while also highlighting the compatibility of Algerian and Slovenian foreign policies in fostering peace and justice on the global stage.

A New Chapter in Economic Cooperation: Balanced, Sustainable, and Forward-Looking

On the economic front, President Tebboune and President Musar jointly inaugurated the Algeria-Slovenia Business Forum, a landmark event that brought together business leaders from both nations to explore investment prospects, deepen commercial ties, and foster mutually beneficial economic integration.

In his address, President Tebboune urged entrepreneurs to work towards aligning the level of economic cooperation with the growing political synergy between the two nations. He emphasized the urgency of translating shared diplomatic values into concrete and sustainable economic outcomes.

Several key agreements were signed during the forum, including:

  • A natural gas supply contract between Algeria’s Sonatrach and Slovenia’s energy company Geoplin, cementing Algeria’s role as a reliable energy partner in Europe;

  • A memorandum of understanding between the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) and its Slovenian counterpart, aimed at bolstering institutional trade frameworks;

  • A cooperation agreement between the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) and Slovenia’s Public Agency for Investment and Entrepreneurship, laying the groundwork for future joint ventures.

Additional protocols were inked in strategic sectors such as maritime transport, police cooperation, and space activities for peaceful purposes, illustrating the multi-dimensional character of this bilateral engagement.

Looking ahead, both parties expressed a clear intent to expand cooperation into high-potential areas such as artificial intelligence, medical research, pharmaceuticals, heavy industries, environmental management, and higher education. President Tebboune notably proposed exploring wastewater treatment and recycling, particularly for agricultural and industrial use—an area in which Slovenia holds recognized expertise. He suggested that Slovenia could significantly contribute to Algeria’s integrated water management programs.
