Algeria, South Africa Deepen Academic Alliance to Build a Pan-African Scientific Powerhouse

Algiers, Algeria– Thursday, July 17, 2025 |  In an affirmation of South-South cooperation, Algeria and South Africa have taken a new step forward in deepening their strategic academic and scientific partnership. The latest move comes during the visit of South African Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, to Algeria, where a series of high-level meetings and institutional visits culminated in the signing of significant bilateral agreements aimed at reshaping the future of African knowledge production.

At the heart of this cooperation lies a shared determination to harness science, technology, and innovation as engines for socio-economic transformation. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Minister Nzimande visited the University of Saad Dahleb Blida 1, where he toured the state-of-the-art aeronautical engineering technology platform and attended academic lectures delivered by Algerian scholars based in South Africa. The visit highlighted the importance of applied research and academic mobility in driving African-led innovation.

Later, at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Algiers, Professor Nzimande held in-depth bilateral talks with his Algerian counterpart, Professor Kamel Baddari. The discussions, focused on research collaboration and technological innovation, concluded with the signing of an official meeting report and a joint work plan for the 2026–2028 period. This roadmap is expected to formalize joint research programs, innovation hubs, and exchange mechanisms that span universities and research institutions in both countries.

Gratitude Rooted in Liberation History

In an emotionally resonant statement, Minister Nzimande expressed profound gratitude to Algeria for its historic support during South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle. “We attach particular importance to our relationship with the Algerian people and state,” he said. “Algeria endured the brutal legacies of colonization just as we did. During our darkest days under apartheid, Algeria stood by us and supported our liberation efforts. For this, we will always be thankful.”

He added that both nations share a pan-African vision anchored in peace, sovereignty, and mutual respect—values that also guide their joint academic and scientific initiatives.

A Continental Knowledge Hub in the Making

For his part, Minister Baddari underlined the strategic significance of the partnership: “South Africa is a pivotal state in Africa, just like Algeria. We believe scientific research is a challenge of the future in all its dimensions—technological, economic, and social. Together, we aim to build a continental knowledge, science, and innovation hub that can rival global research powerhouses.”

Baddari emphasized that the partnership will center on emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, nanoscience, and advanced technology, adding that Algeria and South Africa are laying the foundations of a new African diplomacy—one of knowledge and scientific excellence.
