Algiers – October 2025 – In a step towards consolidating African solidarity and deepening bilateral cooperation, Algeria and South Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding joint efforts in the fields of national security, civil protection, and the prevention of major risks. This reaffirmation came during a high-level meeting held on Monday in Cape Town between Algeria’s Minister of Interior, Local Assemblies, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, and South Africa’s Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velinkosi Hlabis, according to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of the Interior.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Ministerial Meeting of the G20 Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), in which Sayoud represented Algeria. The two ministers seized the opportunity to celebrate the historical and privileged relations uniting Algiers and Pretoria — ties rooted in shared values of liberation, solidarity, and mutual respect — and to emphasize their determination to broaden the scope of cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, particularly those linked to governance, security, and risk management.
Both parties engaged in constructive discussions on joint projects relating to national safety, civil protection mechanisms, and the management and prevention of major disasters. The talks underscored the importance of strengthening institutional capacities and fostering the exchange of technical expertise between the two nations, especially in crisis response, risk assessment, and disaster mitigation.
The discussions also addressed the reactivation of the bilateral maritime transport agreement signed in 1998, a key framework expected to enhance connectivity and economic exchanges between the two strategic partners. The ministers agreed on the need to accelerate its implementation as part of a broader vision to reinforce cooperation in transportation and logistics, sectors crucial to regional integration and trade facilitation across the African continent.
Furthermore, the meeting served as a platform to review ongoing preparations for the forthcoming G20 Summit of Heads of State, to be hosted by South Africa. Algeria’s participation in these preparatory discussions highlights its commitment to contributing to global governance and sustainable development efforts, particularly within frameworks aimed at disaster risk reduction and resilience building.
