Algiers, Algeria | December 5th, 2024 — Algeria and South Africa’s formal accession to the Guided Trade Initiative of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) marks a defining moment in their bilateral relations and economic strategies. This pivotal move, hailed as a gateway to enhanced trade and investment, underscores the commitment of both nations to the vision of a unified, economically resilient Africa.
In a keynote address during the Algeria-South Africa Economic Forum, held in Algiers and co-chaired by Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, Mohamed Boukhari, and South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition, Parks Tau, Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA), emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership. “Our shared participation in the AfCFTA presents an invaluable opportunity to elevate trade exchanges, improve their quality, and align them with the aspirations of our people,” Moula stated, reaffirming Algeria’s strategic commitment to deeper African economic integration.
A Unified Vision for Regional and Continental Economic Integration
The expansion of regional markets through AfCFTA, described by Moula as a “critical milestone,” is set to empower producers and consumers while fostering robust economic ties across the continent. The CREA president underscored the indispensability of collective African collaboration in stimulating economies, enhancing competitiveness, and creating innovative investment opportunities. “By forging strong linkages among African enterprises, we can amplify our regional presence and assert our competitiveness on the global stage,” he affirmed.
Moula also highlighted the readiness of Algerian enterprises to collaborate extensively with their South African counterparts, signaling a new era of cross-border partnerships that promise mutual economic growth.
Economic Reforms and Investment Opportunities in Algeria
Algeria’s comprehensive economic reforms were spotlighted as a cornerstone for its readiness to embrace expanded trade and investment opportunities. The implementation of a progressive investment law and the prioritization of digitization have been instrumental in creating a more investor-friendly environment. The results are evident: the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) has facilitated the registration of over 10,500 investment projects, signifying a robust surge in entrepreneurial activity.
Moula underscored Algeria’s economic diversification efforts, complementing its natural and geographical advantages. He stressed the elimination of barriers hindering enterprise and investor operations, signaling Algeria’s openness to international collaboration. “Our economic reforms are unlocking Algeria’s potential, positioning it as a dynamic player in the continental and global economy,” he said.
The Path Forward: Collaborative Success
As the forum progressed, both Algerian and South African economic operators expressed confidence in the potential of their engagements to yield fruitful outcomes. Moula declared his optimism that bilateral meetings would culminate in the establishment of sustainable trade and economic partnerships. “Our shared strengths and aspirations create fertile ground for transformative cooperation,” he noted.
The accession of Algeria and South Africa to AfCFTA is more than an economic milestone; it is a testament to their shared vision of an integrated, prosperous Africa. Through this partnership, the two nations are not only fortifying their bilateral ties but also contributing to the realization of a vibrant, interconnected continental market that stands poised to reshape Africa’s economic future.
