Algeria Strengthens Its Position in Global Gas Markets
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – October 2025 – Algeria continues to consolidate its standing as a key and reliable player in the global energy landscape, as the country’s natural gas production surged markedly in August 2025, reaching 8.36 billion cubic meters, an increase of 890 million cubic meters, or 12% growth compared to the same period in 2024, according to data released by the specialized energy platform Attaqa.
This strong performance underscores the success of Algeria’s national energy strategy, which seeks to boost hydrocarbon output through increased foreign investment and strategic partnerships. Notably, at the end of 2024, Algeria signed new partnership agreements with eight international energy companies, within a licensing round aimed at developing vast reserves estimated at 330 billion cubic meters of non-associated gas, 349 billion cubic meters of associated gas, and 562 million barrels of oil.
Domestic Consumption Declines as Exports Recover
In parallel with the rise in production, domestic consumption of natural gas used for power generation and heating dropped to 1.6 billion cubic meters in August 2025, down from 2.85 billion cubic meters in the same month last year. This decline is attributed to improved efficiency in energy infrastructure, the gradual adoption of alternative power sources, and stable summer temperatures, which reduced overall demand.
Data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI) reveals a fluctuating pattern in Algeria’s gas output throughout 2025. Production began the year on a strong note at 9.74 billion cubic meters in January, dipped to 7.85 billion cubic meters in May, and then rebounded in June and August, driven by stable exploration and production operations in southern gas fields.
Exports also followed an upward trajectory, rising to 3.9 billion cubic meters in August, compared to 3.82 billion cubic meters during the same period in 2024. This increase was primarily fueled by stronger pipeline gas flows, reaching 3.1 billion cubic meters, particularly toward Italy and Spain—two of Algeria’s main European partners.
Meanwhile, liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports declined to 2.13 million tons in the third quarter of 2025, compared to 2.61 million tons a year earlier, largely due to scheduled maintenance at several liquefaction facilities.
Despite global energy market fluctuations and declining demand in certain regions, Algeria remains one of North Africa’s most stable and trusted energy suppliers, leveraging its robust pipeline network, advanced liquefaction infrastructure, and strategic relationships with European clients.
The August performance reflects Algeria’s steadfast commitment to a balanced energy policy, centered on enhancing production, diversifying export markets, and honoring contractual obligations amid a complex and evolving international environment.
