Algeria, Switzerland Deepen Judicial Cooperation in Fight Against Corruption and Asset Recovery

Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2025 — In a diplomatic move to strengthen legal collaboration, Algeria and Switzerland reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying judicial cooperation, particularly in the realm of criminal justice and asset recovery.

On Monday, Algeria’s Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals, Mr. Lotfi Boudjemaa, received Swiss Minister of Justice and Police, Mr. Beat Jans, in Algiers, as part of the Swiss minister’s official visit to the country.

The high-level meeting focused on reviewing the current state of institutional and legal cooperation between the two countries, and exploring new avenues for enhancing bilateral judicial relations in key sectors such as anti-corruption, legal training, and cross-border judicial assistance.

Asset Recovery and Criminal Justice at the Core

In a statement to the press following the talks, Minister Boudjemaa underlined that the meeting had allowed for “a comprehensive and constructive dialogue,” particularly concerning criminal justice cooperation related to the recovery of embezzled public funds. He described the bilateral legal partnership as “very positive,” noting Algeria’s strong interest in repatriating illicit assets held abroad.

For his part, Minister Jans acknowledged the considerable progress made in recent years between the two justice ministries, expressing hope that this cooperation would continue with “the same positive momentum.” He reiterated Switzerland’s “firm determination to support Algeria in the field of asset recovery,” and stressed the importance of shared accountability and legal transparency between international partners.

Minister Beat Jans is leading a two-day official visit to Algeria, accompanied by senior officials from the Swiss Ministry of Justice. The visit includes meetings with various Algerian government departments, aiming to broaden the scope of Swiss-Algerian institutional partnerships, particularly in justice, law enforcement, and migration policy.

This visit comes at a time when Algeria is actively pursuing a robust strategy to recover misappropriated state assets, as part of broader reforms to promote good governance, restore public trust, and reinforce the rule of law.
