Algiers, Algeria | June 30th, 2025 — In a step toward enhanced international security cooperation, Algeria and Switzerland signed a bilateral police agreement on Monday in Algiers, signaling a new era of collaboration in the fight against transnational crime.

The signing ceremony was co-chaired by Algerian Minister of the Interior, Local Assemblies, and Urban Development, Mr. Brahim Merad, and the Swiss Minister of Justice and Police, Mr. Beat Jans. The agreement was formally inked by Ali Badaoui, Director General of the Algerian National Police, and Eva Wilde, Director of the Swiss Federal Police.

This strategic partnership is tailored to bolster bilateral efforts in combating cross-border criminal threats, including economic and financial crimes, human trafficking, narcotics trafficking, and cybercrime. The agreement also encompasses expertise-sharing initiatives, technical assistance, and joint training programs aimed at reinforcing the operational capabilities of both nations’ law enforcement agencies.

Legal Modernization and Operational Commitments

During the ceremony, Minister Merad emphasized Algeria’s proactive stance in adapting to evolving security threats. He highlighted recent legal reforms undertaken by Algeria to modernize its criminal justice system, noting that the agreement is part of a broader framework to elevate Algeria’s role in regional and international security architecture.

Merad also announced the upcoming creation of a joint working committee, which will be tasked with the implementation and follow-up of the agreement’s clauses, ensuring operational efficiency and tangible results.

Switzerland: A Trusted Security Partner

Minister Beat Jans praised the long-standing diplomatic ties between Switzerland and Algeria, describing them as a solid foundation for expanded cooperation in security, justice, and irregular migration control. He reaffirmed Switzerland’s trust in Algeria’s institutional capabilities and expressed optimism that this bilateral engagement would foster greater regional stability and cross-border crime deterrence.

This agreement reflects a shared vision for international police collaboration at a time when transnational criminal networks are becoming more sophisticated and borderless. The move also reinforces Algeria’s status as a key player in regional security, while offering Switzerland an active partner in North Africa for addressing mutual concerns related to law enforcement and organized crime.
