Algiers, Algeria | June 4th, 2025 — In a significant step toward bolstering energy sector cooperation, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held a high-level phone conversation on Wednesday with his Syrian counterpart, Mohamed Bachir, to follow up on the outcomes of the diplomatic mission to Damascus carried out on February 10, 2025, by Algeria’s Foreign Minister, acting as a special envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The two ministers discussed the reinforcement and expansion of bilateral cooperation in the energy field, focusing particularly on electricity production, transmission, and distribution. They also addressed the critical need for maintaining and modernizing Syria’s electrical grids and equipment, reaffirming the strategic and fraternal nature of the ties between the two nations—anchored in a long history of mutual solidarity.

In line with President Tebboune’s directives and Algeria’s longstanding commitment to Arab unity and support, the ministers agreed to dispatch a technical mission to Syria, composed of engineers, experts, and senior executives from the state-owned energy group Sonelgaz. This delegation will carry out an on-site assessment of Syria’s electricity infrastructure, diagnose urgent needs, and formulate a comprehensive action plan aimed at restoring and strengthening the national energy system.

Demonstrating its enduring spirit of regional cooperation, Algeria also expressed its readiness to host Syrian technical specialists for an advanced training program in electricity and gas engineering, which will be conducted by Sonelgaz’s specialized institutes. This initiative seeks to empower Syrian professionals through knowledge transfer and long-term skills development.

The two ministers went further, reaffirming their shared political will to broaden bilateral cooperation into additional strategic sectors, including hydrocarbons, mining, and renewable energy. They underscored the imperative of translating diplomatic momentum into tangible, high-impact projects, capable of generating lasting economic value and fortifying resilience in both countries.

To this end, they stressed the importance of intensifying expert-level exchanges and institutional partnerships, while accelerating mechanisms for experience-sharing and technical collaboration. Both parties reiterated their desire to establish a sustainable, multidimensional partnership anchored in mutual respect, common interests, and shared geopolitical vision.
