ALGIERS- In his address commemorating World Water Day, Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal highlighted Algeria’s steadfast progress towards achieving sustainable water security under the wise leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Derbal emphasized the urgent measures taken by the government to ensure stable funding for regions affected by water scarcity, including the completion of numerous wells and seawater desalination plants.

The minister underscored the significance of the 2025 plan, which includes the completion of 7 seawater desalination plants aimed at ensuring national water security and providing potable water to coastal regions. This strategic initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by climate change, which have impacted water reserves globally.

Derbal praised the collaborative efforts across various sectors to execute vital infrastructure projects aimed at securing water resources, acknowledging the profound historical importance of water as a cornerstone of civilization. He stressed that water remains a strategic element for nations and highlighted the need for sustainable water management practices to meet current and future demands.

The completion of 7 seawater desalination plants represents a significant milestone in Algeria’s journey towards achieving water security. These plants will not only bolster the nation’s water supply but also alleviate pressure on existing freshwater sources, particularly in coastal regions facing water scarcity.
