Ministry of Religious Affairs Confirms Arafat Day for June 5, Calls on Algerians to Embrace Piety and Uphold the Spirit of Sacrifice

Algiers, Algeria | May 27th, 2025 — The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments has officially announced that Friday, June 6, 2025, will mark the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s holiest celebrations. The sacred day of Arafat, which precedes Eid and represents the spiritual pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage, will be observed on Thursday, June 5.

In its official communiqué released Tuesday, the Ministry called on all Algerians to seize these blessed days of Dhul-Hijjah as an opportunity for heightened piety, prayer, and charity. “Eid al-Adha is not only a commemoration of the Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) unwavering submission to God, but a moment of unity and compassion within the Algerian nation,” the statement read.

A Celebration Rooted in Devotion and Community

In Algeria, Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid El-Kebir (The Grand Eid), holds profound spiritual, cultural, and familial significance. Observed on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, the festival honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, an act ultimately replaced with the divine mercy of a ram.

This festival of sacrifice (‘Id al-Qurbān) is traditionally marked by the ritual slaughtering of livestock—most commonly sheep, but also cattle and camels—by those who can afford it. In Algeria, this rite is performed with reverence and deep religious symbolism, accompanied by generous acts of charity, as the meat is shared between family, neighbors, and the needy.

An Enduring Algerian Tradition

Eid al-Adha in Algeria is a time of communal celebration and spiritual renewal, passed down through generations. In towns and villages across the country, families gather in homes adorned with traditional decorations and scents of incense. The pre-dawn hours of Eid day are filled with Takbir chants, followed by mass congregational prayers at mosques and open grounds.

The Algerian Eid table, particularly during the days following the sacrifice, becomes a canvas of traditional cuisine—grilled liver wrapped in caul fat (douara), meat skewers, slow-cooked lamb, and couscous—each dish reflecting Algeria’s rich culinary heritage.

Artisans and merchants also prepare months in advance. In markets from Algiers to Tamanrasset, sacrificial animals are carefully selected, while tailors offer special Eid garments, especially for children.

Faith, Sacrifice, and Social Justice

Beyond festivity, the Ministry of Religious Affairs emphasized the moral and spiritual essence of Eid, urging Algerians to renew their faith, support the less fortunate, and strengthen familial bonds. “Eid is not merely about ritual, but a test of our humility, gratitude, and social responsibility,” the communiqué affirmed.

The Ministry also reminded the public of the values of cleanliness, patience, and cooperation during this peak season, as communities prepare to uphold public health and safety standards while preserving Islamic traditions.
