Algeria Tops Arab, African Rankings in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024

Algiers, Algeria | June 13th, 2024 — Algeria has achieved a significant milestone by securing the top position among Arab and African countries in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024. This achievement, announced by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, highlights Algeria’s commitment to advancing its higher education sector.

Unprecedented Success

The 2024 rankings evaluated 2,152 universities from 124 countries, including 54 Algerian institutions. This marks a substantial increase from the 2023 edition, which featured only 12 Algerian higher education institutions. The Ministry’s statement emphasized that Algeria’s presence in these rankings demonstrates its leading position in the Maghreb, Africa, and the Arab world in terms of the number of higher education institutions listed.

Top National Performer

Among Algerian universities, the University of Oum El-Bouaghi emerged as the top performer, ranking within the 401-600 range globally. This accomplishment underscores the sector’s dedication to improving the standing of national higher education institutions in global rankings and enhancing their international visibility.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess universities based on their contributions to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The evaluation considers four primary areas: research, outreach, stewardship, and teaching. This comprehensive approach measures the overall impact of universities on societal development.
