Algeria, Tunisia Forge Regional Health Strategy: Saihi Advances “One Health” Vision in Tunis

Algerian Minister of Health Advocates Coordinated Action with Tunisia on Food Security, Zoonotic Diseases, and Environmental Health during High-Level Talks

Algiers, Algeria | June 16th, 2025 — In a move to bolster regional health cooperation, Algerian Minister of Health, Abdelhak Saihi, held a high-level meeting in Tunis with Tunisian Ministers of Agriculture and Environment, Ezzedine Ben Cheikh and Abid Habib, respectively. The talks took place on the sidelines of the First Regional Conference on the “One Health” approach for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, underscoring the shared determination of both countries to implement integrated health, environmental, and agricultural policies.

During the discussions, Minister Saihi showcased Algeria’s robust experience in operationalizing the “One Health” framework. He emphasized that the Algerian model prioritizes the improvement of citizens’ living conditions and the reduction of social disparities, two objectives placed at the core of the state’s national agenda.

According to a communiqué from the Algerian Ministry of Health, Saihi explained that this holistic strategy was carried out in close coordination across multiple sectors—namely health, environment, agriculture, commerce, water resources, and industry. The cross-sectoral approach aims to adapt and harmonize national action plans through practical, preventative measures.

Notably, Saihi proposed a forward-looking regional initiative, calling for the creation of an independent coordination body uniting MENA and Maghreb states. The body, he suggested, would be tasked with ensuring food security and implementing standardized environmental practices that protect public health.

“The Algerian state is firmly committed to crystallizing a clear and unified vision around this vital issue,” declared Saihi. “We recognize the urgency of safeguarding food security and promoting a healthy, balanced diet for every citizen.”

The Tunisian Minister of Agriculture echoed Saihi’s concern, drawing attention to the severe impact of zoonotic diseases—those transmitted between animals and humans—on both public health and food systems. He called for enhanced coordination among the ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Environment to proactively address emerging threats.

Similarly, the Minister of Environment of Tunisia emphasized the crucial role of a healthy environment in achieving sustainable development. He lauded the positive results of joint intersectoral cooperation, which, he stressed, remains fundamental to preserving human health within a stable and ecologically sound environment.
