Algiers- Algeria, May 8, 2024 – The joint commission meeting on Algerian-Tunisian customs cooperation wrapped up in Algiers on Wednesday with the signing of a protocol aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two countries in various customs-related areas.
The protocol, signed at the headquarters of the Algerian General Directorate of Customs (DGD) by Major General Abdelhafidh Bakhouche, the Director General of Algerian Customs, and his Tunisian counterpart, Zouheir Mejri, represents a significant advancement in bilateral relations. The signing ceremony was attended by the Tunisian delegation, senior officials from the DGD, and the Tunisian Ambassador to Algeria, Ramdhane Elfayedh.
Following the signing ceremony, Major General Bakhouche stated during a press conference that the discussions held during the meeting were productive, focusing on assessing the outcomes of previous commission meetings and enhancing cooperation to strengthen controls on the movement of travelers and goods.
Moreover, both parties agreed to enhance cooperation in training, capacity building, and expertise exchange, as well as in customs intelligence and information sharing. Major General Bakhouche assured that all agreements made with Tunisian customs would be effectively implemented.
Zouheir Mejri, the Director General of Tunisian Customs, emphasized the significance of the protocol, highlighting the smooth dialogue and bilateral negotiations during the meeting. He stressed that the outcomes of the meeting, including decisions and programs agreed upon, would be put into effect through the establishment of coordination commissions and the exchange of expertise.
At the conclusion of the signing ceremony, Mejri signed the DGD’s guestbook. It is worth noting that the joint commission meeting was held in accordance with the provisions of the administrative cooperation agreement signed in Tunis on January 9, 1981.
