Minister Faycal Bentaleb highlights Algeria’s commitment to inclusive development through social solidarity frameworks during high-level talks with UNDP Representative Natasha Van Rijn

Algiers, Algeria | May 22nd, 2025 —  In a step toward fostering inclusive and sustainable economic development, Algeria’s Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Faycal Bentaleb, held a high-level meeting with Natasha Van Rijn, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Algeria. The two sides exchanged views on advancing bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on expanding the role of the social and solidarity economy as a pillar of national development.

During the talks, Minister Bentaleb emphasized the fruitful and constructive partnership that has long characterized relations between Algeria and the UNDP, particularly in areas tied to socioeconomic empowerment and inclusive economic models. He underlined that the social and solidarity economy stands as a sustainable and viable economic framework, deeply rooted in the values of Algerian society.

“This model embodies our national ethos of solidarity and mutual support,” Bentaleb stated, “and is fully reflected in our social security system, which is founded on principles of generational solidarity and social justice.”

He added that Algeria considers this economic model not only a means to generate employment and support vulnerable communities, but also a vehicle for strengthening social cohesion and ensuring long-term economic resilience.

UNDP Representative Natasha Van Rijn welcomed the Minister’s commitment and praised Algeria’s efforts in promoting sustainable development. She described the existing cooperation as “robust and forward-looking,” and expressed UNDP’s full readiness to broaden its engagement with Algeria, particularly in reinforcing mechanisms that support community-based initiatives, innovation, and inclusive growth.

“We deeply value our partnership with Algeria,” Van Rijn affirmed. “The country’s dedication to sustainable development and to building a resilient, solidarity-driven economy is a model that aligns with our global objectives. We look forward to scaling up our cooperation in this crucial sector.”

Both parties agreed on the need to strengthen institutional dialogue, enhance knowledge exchange, and promote joint programs that integrate the social and solidarity economy into national strategies for employment, youth empowerment, and economic inclusion.
