Algiers – November 2025 – Algeria has taken decisive steps to confront the growing risks posed by extreme weather events, notably floods, as highlighted by Minister of Water Resources Taha Derbal during a study day dedicated to climate change. The event, organized by the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), brought together experts and institutional stakeholders to assess the country’s vulnerability and outline a forward-looking governance strategy.
In his address, Derbal underscored that Algeria has already initiated the required measures to mitigate the devastating impact of floods, a phenomenon becoming increasingly recurrent due to global climate disruptions. He stressed that local authorities play a central role in the implementation of flood-prevention plans, particularly through the development and rehabilitation of riverbeds, valleys, and water bodies. These local-level projects, he noted, constitute the operational backbone of the national strategy and are indispensable for strengthening territorial resilience.
The minister also emphasized the crucial importance of coordination between the various sectors involved in major risk prevention. Intersectoral cooperation—between water resources, environment, civil protection, urban planning, and local governance—is, according to Derbal, essential for anticipating threats, ensuring rapid response, and reducing human and material losses.
