ALGIERS- Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mokhtar Didouche, has disclosed that Algeria experienced a notable influx in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, welcoming around 3.3 million visitors from diverse nationalities. This figure comprised 2.2 million foreign tourists and 1.1 million Algerian expatriates.
During the past biennium (2022-2023), coastal provinces observed a substantial influx of tourists, with approximately 3 million families (totaling 12 million individuals) opting for accommodation in hotels or private residences. Didouche emphasized the growing popularity of tourism in Algeria, both domestically and internationally, backed by compelling indicators and statistics.
In the lead-up to the summer season, the minister disclosed that the National Intersectoral Committee, chaired by the Ministry of Interior, Local Assemblies, and Urban Planning, is diligently preparing for the forthcoming tourist season.
Didouche stressed the critical importance of collaborative endeavors to ensure the success of the upcoming summer season and those to follow. He urged stakeholders to propose proactive solutions and execute them diligently to provide optimal conditions for local tourists, expatriates, and international visitors, in alignment with governmental priorities.
Furthermore, to bolster accommodation capacity, over 2200 projects have received approval, with 800 currently underway. Annually, approximately 50 to 60 projects, each capable of accommodating 6000 beds, are initiated, signaling a notable expansion in tourist infrastructure. This contributes to enhancing and diversifying the existing portfolio to meet international standards.
Moreover, the sector boasts a targeted real estate portfolio designed to attract investment projects in the tourism sector.
The minister seized the opportunity to remind stakeholders that the summer season presents both challenges and opportunities to showcase Algeria’s tourism potential. He urged for continuous collective efforts to elevate the tourism sector to the desired level.
