Algiers, September 8, 2023 – Ahmed Attaf, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced today during his official visit to Hungary the eagerly anticipated visit of Hungarian President Katalin Novak to Algeria. This significant development was revealed after Minister Attaf held a crucial meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Szijjarto, in Budapest, at the request of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was emphasized that “Ahmed Attaf underscored the paramount importance of President Katalin Novak’s forthcoming visit to Algeria, graciously extended by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.”

The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs further highlighted the necessity for meticulous preparation during this momentous occasion to yield substantial and groundbreaking outcomes, ushering in a new chapter in the history of Algerian-Hungarian relations.

Hungary’s Quest for Algerian Gas

One of the prominent topics discussed during the consultations between Minister Attaf and his Hungarian counterpart was Hungary’s keen interest in importing Algerian gas as part of its strategy to diversify energy sources.

Minister Ahmed Attaf, in his statement, disclosed that “various practical measures have been agreed upon to enhance communication across official channels and foster ties between business communities. These measures aim to revitalize bilateral relations and open new avenues of cooperation.”

The discussions between the two diplomats also encompassed comprehensive cooperation plans to bolster trade and investment between Algerian and Hungarian companies.

“At this juncture, numerous projects between our two nations are either near completion or under evaluation. These initiatives span across critical sectors such as traditional and renewable energy, training, security collaboration, agriculture, fisheries, and air transportation,” Minister Attaf asserted.

Echoing this sentiment, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto expressed his country’s strong desire to import Algerian gas, asserting that it aligns with Hungary’ strategic goal of diversifying its energy sources.

The upcoming visit of President Katalin Novak to Algeria holds the promise of not only fortifying diplomatic ties but also forging mutually beneficial economic partnerships, symbolizing the ever-strengthening bond between the two nations.
