Algerian Army Delivers Crushing Blows to Terrorism, Organized Crime, and Illegal Migration in Nationwide Operations

Algiers, Algeria | The Ministry of National Defense released on Wednesday a comprehensive operational report highlighting the decisive actions of the People’s National Army (ANP) between August 13 and 19, 2025. The week was marked by the surrender of a terrorist in the country’s south, the dismantling of several criminal networks, and large-scale rescue operations against illegal migration.

 

According to the communiqué, these operations underscore “the sustained momentum of the ANP’s relentless efforts in combating terrorism and organized crime in all its forms, reflecting the professionalism, vigilance, and permanent readiness of our armed forces across the national territory.”

Counterterrorism Successes

In a significant breakthrough, the terrorist Okba Kounta Sid Ahmed, alias “Mohamed,” laid down his arms before the military authorities in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, within the 6th Military Region. He surrendered with a Kalashnikov submachine gun, a Semënov semi-automatic rifle, quantities of ammunition, and other equipment.

Simultaneously, ANP detachments conducted operations that led to the arrest of three support elements linked to terrorist groups in various regions, confirming once more the army’s unyielding grip on the remnants of terrorism.

Cracking Down on Criminal Networks

The ANP also intensified its campaign against organized crime and narcotrafficking, in close coordination with national security services. These operations resulted in the arrest of 31 drug traffickers, the thwarting of attempts to smuggle 166 kilograms of processed cannabis across the Moroccan border, and the seizure of 2.23 kilograms of cocaine along with 131,318 psychotropic tablets.

At Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Salah, and Illizi, 270 individuals were apprehended, and large quantities of equipment used in illicit gold mining were confiscated, including 23 vehicles, 158 generators, 63 jackhammers, and 4 metal detectors. Authorities also seized raw gold mixtures and tools used in illegal excavation.

In parallel, 11 other suspects were arrested, while security forces confiscated 7 hunting rifles, 17,035 liters of smuggled fuel, and 600 kilograms of contraband tobacco, demonstrating the ANP’s sweeping reach across multiple fronts.

Combating Illegal Migration

The coastguards successfully foiled numerous attempts of clandestine migration. During these high-risk operations, 513 individuals aboard makeshift vessels were rescued, while 507 illegal migrants of different nationalities were arrested across national territory. These actions reaffirm the ANP’s dual role as a shield of national security and a humanitarian force committed to saving lives at sea.

This operational record once again illustrates the ANP’s vigilance, strategic foresight, and ability to simultaneously confront terrorism, organized crime, and transnational challenges.
