Algerian Army Foils Major Drug Smuggling and Terror Support Networks in Unrelenting Border Security Campaign

Over 18 Quintals of Kif Treated Seized, Dozens of Narcotraffickers and Terror Facilitators Arrested in Sweeping ANP Operations

Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In a resounding demonstration of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and countering transnational threats, the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) has successfully thwarted several major criminal operations, including the smuggling of more than 18.5 quintals of processed kif through the country’s western border with Morocco, and dismantled key support networks linked to terrorist groups.

According to a detailed weekly report issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of National Defense (MDN), these achievements were recorded during the period from May 21 to May 27, 2025, and span all military regions across the national territory.

Relentless War on Narcotrafficking

The report highlights that 45 drug traffickers were apprehended, while massive quantities of illicit substances were confiscated in meticulously coordinated operations. Alongside the staggering seizure of 18.5 quintals (1,850 kilograms) of kif treated, security forces also intercepted 1,400 grams of cocaine and over 114,000 psychotropic tablets—a clear indicator of the multi-faceted nature of narcotics trafficking networks operating across borders.

These operations, primarily concentrated along the Moroccan frontier—long identified as a hotbed for narcotics infiltration—underscore Algeria’s firm stance against what it views as hybrid threats aimed at undermining its youth and national security.

Terrorism Support Networks Crushed

Beyond the fight against drug smuggling, the ANP’s vigilance also extended to the counterterrorism front. The Ministry revealed that ten individuals suspected of providing logistical support to terrorist groups were arrested during targeted raids conducted in various regions of the country.

These arrests reaffirm the proactive posture of Algeria’s armed forces in neutralizing potential internal threats before they can materialize, especially in light of the volatile regional context in the Sahel and Maghreb.

Illegal Migration Attempts Intercepted

The same operational week also witnessed a crackdown on illegal migration networks, particularly along Algeria’s extensive maritime borders. Coast Guard units and ANP detachments successfully intercepted multiple migration attempts across national waters, rescuing 157 individuals who were found aboard makeshift vessels—often unseaworthy and operated by traffickers.

Furthermore, 378 irregular migrants of various nationalities were detained in coordinated operations across multiple provinces, as part of Algeria’s broader strategy to confront organized human smuggling and protect human lives from the perils of clandestine crossings.

This comprehensive weekly toll attests to the ANP’s exceptional operational readiness and strategic depth in responding to a spectrum of cross-border criminal activities, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and illegal migration. The Ministry of National Defense emphasized that these operations are not only defensive in nature but serve to consolidate internal stability and reaffirm Algeria’s sovereign control over its vast borders.
