Algerian Army Foils Terrorist Plots, Disrupts Narcotrafficking Networks and Dismantles Smuggling Rings in a Sweeping National Crackdown

Algiers – December 2025 – In a robust demonstration of operational readiness and national security vigilance, the People’s National Army (ANP) carried out a series of coordinated security operations between 26 November and 2 December 2025, leading to the surrender of two terrorists, the arrest of four of their collaborators, and the disruption of extensive narcotrafficking and smuggling networks across Algeria. The weekly report, released on Wednesday, highlights the scale, precision and strategic effectiveness of Algeria’s ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-crime efforts.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, the ANP’s sustained campaign reflects “high professionalism, vigilance and permanent readiness” of the armed forces, who continue to operate across all military regions with unwavering consistency. The ministry announced that two terrorists—identified as G.A., known as ‘Abou Djaffer’, and H.C., known as ‘Al-Cherif’—turned themselves in to military authorities in Adrar and In Guezzam. They surrendered with a substantial cache of weapons, including one machine gun, three Kalashnikov submachine guns, ammunition and various other military supplies, highlighting the persistence of armed activity in remote zones despite intensified counter-terrorism pressure.
The ministry further revealed that four additional individuals believed to be providing logistical support to terrorist cells were arrested in separate operations nationwide. These arrests underscore the ANP’s strategy of dismantling not only armed groups but also their enabling networks, which often operate in concealed and dispersed structures.
Beyond counter-terrorism, the ANP also reported major breakthroughs in combating organized crime. Joint military-security detachments intercepted thirty narcotraffickers and thwarted attempts to smuggle 19 quintals and 93 kilograms of processed cannabis from Morocco. The operations also led to the seizure of 1,425,734 psychotropic tablets, reflecting an alarming surge in transnational drug flows targeting Algeria’s borders.
Further south, military units in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, Illizi and Djanet arrested 344 individuals involved in illegal mining and smuggling activities. Authorities seized 29 vehicles, 244 electric generators, 133 jackhammers, raw gold mixtures, minerals and specialized equipment used in clandestine gold extraction. These seizures point to the growing underground economy feeding off insecurity and porous desert borders.
Complementary operations resulted in the arrest of fourteen additional suspects and the confiscation of one Kalashnikov, seven hunting rifles, over 103,000 liters of fuel, 25 quintals of tobacco and 10 tons of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculative trafficking. These seizures illustrate the scope of illicit activities converging around contraband, parallel economies and cross-border criminal logistics.
The Ministry also emphasized efforts to fight irregular migration. Coast Guard units thwarted multiple attempts at illegal sea crossings, rescuing 63 individuals travelling aboard improvised boats, while 270 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were apprehended nationwide. These operations reflect Algeria’s dual focus: preventing maritime tragedies while dismantling human trafficking networks exploiting vulnerable populations.
