Algerian Army Thwarts Terror Support Networks and Major Trafficking Rings in Sweeping National Crackdown

Nine Terrorist Support Elements Arrested, 50 Drug Traffickers Captured, and 908 Illegal Migrants Intercepted in a Week of High-Impact Operations

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 — The Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) has dealt a resounding blow to terrorist support cells and transnational criminal networks, arresting nine individuals linked to terrorist groups, alongside dozens of traffickers and illegal miners, during comprehensive security operations conducted across the country between June 11 and June 17, 2025.

According to the latest operational report released by the Ministry of National Defence (MDN) on Wednesday, these actions form part of Algeria’s sustained campaign against terrorism and organized crime, reflecting the professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering readiness of its armed forces.

In the counterterrorism domain, nine terror support elements were apprehended in various regions, as the ANP continues its systematic efforts to dismantle logistical and ideological backbones of terrorist cells operating within national borders.

In the relentless battle against drug trafficking, 50 narcotrafiquants were intercepted through joint ANP-security service operations, which also foiled attempts to smuggle 341 kilograms of processed cannabis across the western border with Morocco. Furthermore, authorities seized 91 kilograms of cocaine and a staggering 1,453,577 psychotropic pills across military regions—illustrating the sheer scale and sophistication of narcotics networks being targeted.

At the same time, anti-smuggling operations in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, and In Salah resulted in the arrest of 216 individuals, and the confiscation of 42 vehicles, 143 generators, 84 jackhammers, and significant quantities of raw gold, explosives, and illegal mining equipment. These seizures underline the military’s role in curbing illicit gold mining and protecting national resources.

Additionally, 14 more individuals were detained, with authorities recovering a machine gun, a sniper rifle, a hunting rifle, over 24,610 liters of smuggled fuel, 900 kilograms of contraband tobacco, and 5 tons of foodstuffs destined for illegal speculation and cross-border trafficking.

On the maritime front, Coast Guard units successfully thwarted several illegal migration attempts, rescuing 102 individuals aboard makeshift vessels, while 908 undocumented migrants of various nationalities were arrested in operations nationwide.

These developments underscore Algeria’s holistic security doctrine, which links national defence with internal stability, and positions the ANP as a central pillar in the protection of Algerian sovereignty, economic integrity, and public safety.
