ALGIERS- Algerian sports commentator, Hafid Derradji, wrote: “It appears that the contract that bound Djamel Belmadi to the Algerian Football Federation wasn’t as symbolic to the public as initially portrayed. Recent revelations suggest a purely financial agreement, as the coach now demands his full entitlements until 2026, amounting to over 7 million euros, in exchange for his departure. This comes as the Algerian Football Federation President Walid Sadi proposed compensations not exceeding three months’ salary, valued at 624,000 euros.
Contrary to the usual practice in coaching contracts worldwide, Belmadi, since 2018, received over 12 million euros in salaries and bonuses without specific performance targets outlined in his agreement.
While the Algerian Football Federation did not dismiss Belmadi formally, the coach announced his departure to the players in the locker rooms after the Mauritania match. The news was leaked to French media before an amicable agreement was reached upon his return to Algeria, facilitated by Walid Sadi. This was a smooth process for the entire coaching staff, but Belmadi insisted on receiving his full contractual dues.”
The question remains whether wisdom will prevail, and Belmadi will realize that a mutually agreed departure is better for his morale and ethics. Alternatively, will the matter be escalated to FIFA for resolution? Belmadi’s coaching tenure seems untenable after repeated failures, while the Algerian Football Federation has not officially removed him from his position until his full entitlements are settled.
