Algiers, Algeria | June 29th, 2025 — On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, commemorated annually on June 30—the date marking the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889—the Council of the Nation of Algeria, under the leadership of Speaker Azouz Nasri, issued a statement highlighting the remarkable strides achieved in promoting women’s rights and gender equality across the country.

Echoing this year’s global theme, “Advancing Gender Equality: One Step at a Time,” the Council emphasized that Algeria has made a qualitative leap in women’s empowerment, enshrining constitutional and legislative reforms that pave the way for inclusive development and equal opportunity.

Constitutional Guarantees and Social Progress

The statement underscored that the 2020 constitutional revision established gender parity in employment as a binding principle and broadened economic support programs specifically targeting women—particularly in rural and marginalized regions. Algeria’s legal arsenal has also been fortified through the constitutional criminalization of violence against women, reflecting a broader national commitment to social justice and human dignity.

The Council hailed these reforms as part of a sustained state policy under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at reinforcing the presence and influence of women across all sectors of national life—including education, judiciary, diplomacy, administration, and the defense and security institutions. Algerian women today hold senior positions and continue to win national and international accolades in various fields.

The statement paid tribute to the historic and ongoing contributions of Algerian women, from the era of the liberation struggle to present-day nation-building. It emphasized their central role in instilling the values of equality, citizenship, and national pride, and stressed that building an inclusive society requires dismantling all forms of exclusion and discrimination.

Call for International Solidarity with Oppressed Women

In a poignant closing, the Council of the Nation turned its attention to the harsh humanitarian conditions endured by Palestinian and Sahrawi women, calling on parliaments around the world to take action to lift the injustice and uphold their right to live in dignity and security.

Speaker Azouz Nasri reaffirmed Algeria’s enduring commitment to parliamentary diplomacy in the service of human rights, peace, and social equity, urging fellow legislative bodies to adopt a proactive stance in defending women’s rights globally—especially in conflict zones where their lives and dignity are threatened.
