Algerian Filmmaking Shines Bright at the Heart of African Cinema

Algiers, Algeria | In a remarkable testament to Algeria’s growing footprint in the continental cultural scene, six Algerian short films have been officially selected to compete in the “Canex Shorts” competition. Organized by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the event forms an integral part of the “Canex 2025” cultural and creative showcase, which Algeria will proudly host this September.

According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Culture and Arts, the short film competition runs in parallel with the much-anticipated fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), scheduled to take place from 4 to 10 September in Algiers under the theme “A Gateway to New Opportunities.”

Out of thirty films selected from across the African continent for the final stage, Algeria has secured a powerful presence with six titles spanning documentary, fiction, and animation genres—highlighting the creative diversity and technical sophistication of the nation’s emerging filmmakers.

In the documentary category, three Algerian films have made the cut: “Tipasa” by Ahmed Baramdan, “The Spark” by Karim Temmimount, and “The Old City” by Tajine Salah Eddine Sami. Each of these works presents a unique cinematic lens on Algeria’s historical depth, social narratives, and visual storytelling tradition.

In the short fiction film category, “Unstoppable” by director Ahmed Ahmed stands out as a strong contender, showcasing bold narrative construction and emotionally resonant themes reflective of contemporary Algerian society.

Meanwhile, in the animation category, the creativity of Algerian youth comes to the forefront with “Olivia” by Chawki Boukef and “Harmonica” by Mohamed Larbi Bourourou—both of which offer imaginative worlds steeped in cultural nuance and visual innovation.

The promotional reels of all competing films will be screened during a special session on 7 September at the Palais des Expositions, SAFEX, in Algiers. The screening will be followed by the much-anticipated awards ceremony, where the winners will be unveiled and celebrated.

The Ministry of Culture and Arts reaffirmed its commitment to supporting every phase of the Intra-African Trade Fair, underlining that Algeria’s cultural diplomacy is intrinsically tied to its broader vision of Pan-African collaboration, soft power influence, and the global projection of its creative industries.
